I'm going to remove the Edelbrock heads on my 440/493 to have them ported. I plan to use some thicker head gaskets to lower the compression as well. I am considering Cometic MLS gaskets, but I've been looking at other brands as well. Flatout sells copper head gaskets in several thicknesses. I called them several months ago about them and seem to remember that some of their copper gaskets were supposed to be used along with the Fel-Pro fire ring head gaskets. It seems strange to me to stack head gaskets, but I am pretty sure that the man told me that. Is this right?
I plan to call them on Monday, but as often is the case, I think to ask questions like this after the business closes for the weekend.

How about cometics (not sure of the spelling)?

The Cometics will cost around $300 for the pair.
The Flatouts:

If they are to be used with the Fel-Pro gaskets, I have some of those here. Not trying to be a cheapskate, just trying to be smart with my money.

It seems crazy to me that you can spend that kind of money on head gaskets.
I understand quality costs at 150 and the drop in compression is a driver for you, but 300?!?

Not me, not without knowing for sure it will change anything.

For that kind of money you can get some generic gaskets and try another camshaft, go back to a 509 kit from summit, etc.

Couldn't you get a little taken out of the piston for less $ with a more sure result?

Seems like a lot of 'maybe it'll work' money to me.

Still on your side though

I can't afford this. mark

How about fixing it the right way instead of wasting more money on another bandaid that will probably not work ????

Did I say that out loud ???

Using different head gaskets to change CR isn't necessarily a band-aid. I hear from people all over that the existing 10.7 compression should work with aluminum heads. For me it has not. I've changed cams, carburetors, tried several advance curves, high octane race gas and the issue remains: Too high compression for the highest pump gas. I need to lower the compression and I'm not interested in pulling the pistons to do it right now.

unless you have a very smooth mateing surface on the heads and block those MLS gaskets can be troublsome.
