Whats the best thing to put on header bolts on a big block, to keep the coolant from leaking, I guess you have to put it on both sides, I know the drivers side goes into water jacket.

70 T/A clone, Hensley built 440,(not much more than stock) Low 12's at Bristol,(17 miles from here)8 other various Mopars, used to have 800+ posts back around 2001.

Use the Teflon thread sealant. The uber sticky white goop in a tube. It will allow re-tightening the bolts over time without leaking.

Only way to fly. The guy that did my motor convinced me to do that, I can't believe how many years I spent jacking around with those stupid bolts.

I can't afford this. mark

I also vote for the OE studs with the shoulder in the middle. Shorten the outer fine threaded portion till only enough threads remain for the nut to fit flush. any more than that greatly hampers fitment & is a waste & you can also use a high grade nut that is thinner so you can shorten it even further

Please keep in mind that teflon is a thread lubricant, for tapered threads, like NPT. Thread sealent is needed for threads like header bolts like permatex, or any other RTV.

Thread lubricant will seal threads, but it's designed to allow proper torque for tapered threads.

Especially if you have to pull the header to do a starter change and it requires draining the cooling system

I like to have a thread or 2 sticking out past any nut on anything I am assembling . .031 shouldn't be that big a deal unless you are trying to shave off every last gram of weight ...

when I took up jogging & became a vegan (gradually on each) I lost more weight than was lost with the acquisition of the alum M/C/water pump/intake/valve covers/'source heads combined . I felt better & more importantly the car was faster
