Does the transmission speedometer gear have anything to do with any lubrication? Mine is leaking and trying to decide weather to remove the gear adaptor and plug or replace the seals. No speedometer anyway, more strip than street. When I had my Trans rebuilt and upgraded, builder said to leave it in, but I can't remember why.

The adaptor has an O rig sealing it to the tailhousing and a lip seal that seals the pinion shaft.

The builder probably told you to leave it in because he didn't have the correct 1 49/64" soft plug to seal the hole.

I called builder, He said it flinged oil to the tail housing?

If John K. says it can be plugged with the proper size plug then I would believe it.

Do you have the speedo connection capped ?

You can pull it and replace the seals or pull it and plug the hole, your choice.

what i have done in the past is replace the inner pinion seal and the large o-ring on the speedo housing.

install the pinion gear into the housing, then install speedo housing in the trans.

CLOCK the speedo housing so the gear teeth does not mesh with the output shaft teeth.

then it is sealed and not spinning and present for a later fix of the speedometer.

I had a machinist fried turn me a plug out of aluminimum. It looked like the base part of the speedo gear houseing without the center hole. He even grouved it for an O ring and was held in by the factory clamp...

Some folks just remove the gear and thread the hole in the adapter for a tapered pipe plug....go a step further and hacksaw the threaded part of the adapter.
