I just put a Cal Trac setup on my Dart. Split Mono Springs as well.

Looking for a starting point.

Upper Hole or Lower Hole
Preload or no preload
Shock Settings (#9 stiffest to #1 loosest)

What do you guys run. I know there aren't many stick racers out there, but give me what you know.

Thanks

What shocks are you using?
I have em in the upper hole and my qa1 singles at 4 or 5 clicks from full soft.
Fronts are full soft.
Half turn preload on drivers sode and full turn on other.
Last time out i installed new hoosier 26 8.5 stiff sidewall and they hooked much better than the 27 10.5 qtp they replaced.
I think a stiff sidewall tire is needed with a stick.
Also im gonna get some double adj shocks for the rear as my car bounces a few times on launch.

I've got Rancho 9 way shocks on the rear.

Front end is fully loose with 90/10 and 6" of travel.

I run a much taller tire (30" ET street) than your 26".

I was thinking of trying them out with the lower hole and 1 turn of preload.

Here's what I've learned:
Harder hit on the tire = Upper mounting hole
Softer hit on the tire = Lower mounting hole

Harder hit on the tire = Preload of 1.5 turns
Softer hit on the tire = Air Gap (no preload)

The Shocks control how fast things happen.

A stick car hits the tires way harder than a slush box.

I also, rely on some controlled tire spin at the launch to keep from bogging (clutch locks up 100%).

My initial thought, and e-mail from Travis at CalTrac have me leaning toward Lower hole, 1.5 turns of preload, and #7 shock to start out.

I dont believe in those "hit" charts.

I would start in the top hole not from experience but from what i see most stick cars use.

How do you launch? What RPM? Slipper Clutch or tire spin?

Bouncing tires mean you are hitting too hard or too fast. Need to take hit away and/or stiffen up the shocks to slow down the hit.

Here's the set-up on my street/strip 340 '71 Demon:
-Mono springs 1" lower than stock
-Bars set in lower hole (car would pogo-stick in top hole)
-Pre-load - driver side just touching, passenger side 2 flats
-Rancho's set at 7
-Calvert front shocks with slightly over 5" travel
-Gusset spring perches (I bent a set before doing this)
-28" tall QTP's (slight tire spin)
-McLeod Non-slipper clutch

I have my 2-step set at 5600rpm
At the time it ran a 1.55 60'. Haven't been to the track with the new cylinder heads and intake.

What ET / MPH does that combo run?

This sounds pretty close to my setup and what I was thinking as a starting point.

Why the different preload on the different sides? Did it pull to one side, or did the front end not lift level?

By "flat" do you mean one of the six hex's on the transfer bar? So two Flats is 2/6th of a turn?

At the time it went 11.70 at 117.67. I was having 3rd gear issues back then (since then went to pro-shift / face-plate).

The car would pull to the right, so I pre-loaded the right side bar.

Yep..2 flats. 2/6th of a turn.

With your 414 you may not have to spin it as high as my stock stroke. Even with a 5600 launch I would still get a very slight bog. Ran out of time that day to try more rpm.

My set up for my stocker is lower holes. 3 flats or 1/2 turn preload right side. 1.5 left side. Shocks at 9. I have an Advanced clutch with less than 500lbs of base. Leaving at 6700. M/T 9" tires at 1lbs. The leagl weight is 3305 in G but I usually run 100 over so 3400ish. Jerico with a 3.19 low and 5.13 rear gear. Hope this helps some.

Lower hole, shocks on #1 Adjust tighter if you have too much separation.

Thanks all.

Good info here.

I'll start in the bottom hole, and add a little preload once I get to the track. Run the shocks pretty stiff and see how the first run goes.

I won't be able to play too much, as I'll be driving the car to a UMTR event and I'll have two time trials and then into elims.

Bouncing to me means i need double adj shocks to be able to adj comp and ext seperatly.
