after smoking the tires the other day, i was coming to a stop and felt/ heard some serious grinding coming from rear axle, as if something got ground through the gears. only lasted for a brief moment. jacked up car, rotated wheels, everything sounds fine, car seems fine. 489 case 3.23 suregrip. any ideas?

Not sure if I'd wanna pull the pumpkin for a visual or just continue onward & see what develops. I would jack up the rear till both tires are just off the ground & in gear bearhug each tire & rotate it forward till it breaks free & see if it's smooth/quiet

More than one 489 crush sleeve has crushed some more after spiining and then hooking the tires up Have you backed the car up in gear using reverse yet? If not, try backing it up with the car on a set of jackstands so you or someone else you trust to watch the pinion yoke to see when you go from forward gears(do that test first with your foot on the brakes to preload the drive train and remove any slack in it) to reverse, if the pinion yoke and gear move a tiny bit backwards into the third member stop right then and remove the third member before you hurt it worst If you do not know how or have someone you trust to fix it, replace the crush sleeve, take it to a good competent relialble shop that can fix it for you now I hope that is not it but if it is it will not get better, only worst Good luck
