I picked up a 68 hemi block this week and the only stampings I could find on it were 4-14-68 on the bottom side of the starter ear. Nothing at all on the top pad. No VIN any where. I'm assuming an "over the counter" block. Any comments? Sorry, no pics. My hard drive died in my home computer, so I'm on at work.
there is a couple reasons why there may be no Info on the ID pad and one of them is because it was machined off . Buying old hemi blocks is a crap shoot unless it's a completely assembled engine .
Many hemi blocks that were race pieces have had the decks cut a lot and after you take off so much intake fitment in respect to the end rails will become an issue , the fix is the machine down the end rails also.
This is not a hemi only thing , I had a 69 440HP that was out of a 69 A body that had the top id pad only showing 020 , ... that was because the decks were cut .020 and they cut the china walls so the intake gasket fit properly again.
