Greetings - my son's 68 Dart has had someone pour sand into the tank. It has likely been in there for a while as the car has sat for a couple of years and the car has a locking gas cap. My son has recently been back and has driven it while attending Coast Guard School in Yorktown VA. Attached is what the fuel filter looks like. We replaced the fuel pick up when I was stationed out in Hawaii back in 2011. So.....I am working with a time constraint (has to be fixed in a day 2 at most) do I replace the tank and???? Do I drop it and flush the tank (I can not air dry it out over night)....I have not dealt with this before and I get some advice first. Thanks.

Pull the tank and flush it. Rinse with some gas or diesel and reinstall... Flush the lins and consider a new fuel pump.. The sand will wear out the diaphram.. Hope he enjoys Yorktown. I went through EN training in the eary 70s...

I am truckless..

To dry the tank fast after flushing with water, add a quart or so of denatured alcohol. Shake around and dump. Repeat one more time and it should be good to go. The little bit of alcohol left in won't hurt anything.

Looks like rust to me, I bet you are hearing rust, not sand.

Time for a new tank.

X2 on the new tank. It'll stop ALOT of future problems. Plus you're on a time constraint.
