I just tore down my steering column over the week-end to restore.

When I took the end coupler that goes to the steering box apart; it had a thick gooey tar like stuff inside. I take it that they put that in there to help eliminate vibration coming up thru the column.

What do you recommend I replace it with?

Not sure what lubricant they used from the factory but I would just about bet it was a wheel bearing grease from a tub. Yours is probably thick and gooey from drying out.
