I understand the the 6th digit stands for the model year; 8 = 1968, 3 = 1973, etc, but what happened after 1977. YearOne only describes 1968 - 1974 but I don't see why they would have needed to change until 1977, but 8 couldn't stand for 1978 AND 1968... Anybody have a link or some data on this? ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) Thanks, Scott

Oh yes, 8 could stand for 68 and 78. And when talking about Mopar VINs, it did.
It's really no different than date codes on parts that used single digits for the years. It was assumed that the ambiguity of the single digit would be outweighed by the intuitively obvious difference of the items themselves. Are you really going to think that a lean-burn equipped 1978 Corboda might have been produced in 1968?
Mopar started in about 1981 to conform to the ISO specified 17 digit VINs, complete with the check digit.
For online explanations, one can do a search of "17 digit VINs", and find sources like Wiki that do a fairly decent / mostly accurate job of explaining the history and structure of 17 digit VINs.
For empirical examples, search online want ads or auctions (trader, eBay, etc) that list VINs with the vehicle.

No, I guess I was thinking more about the number on, say an engine block. Hard to tell on just a short block. I should have been more specific

Without knowing your specifics, it's hard to answer. Do you currently have in hand a block with no casting date and no casting number and no part number and no assembly date... only the VIN? ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif)
Maybe you're just setting out a hypothetical? If so, I'll put it back into your court. What sort of situation would have you with a block marked with only the VIN, and nothing else about the mystery part to go on?

Nope, just a boring day at work and idle curiosity. Actually it was this thread that brought the question to mind. https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...;gonew=1#UNREAD I just didn't want to steal that one. Sorry
Truthfully, I have rebuilt three engines in my life. The first was with the close guidance of my dad when I was 16. The last was twenty years ago. I really wasn't aware there were so many different stampings. I just knew of the P/N and VIN. Thanks

An engine block has 2 makings to identify the year. -casting date; all should have this -engine ID stamp; example, a '69 440 will have E440 stamp on the ID pad, E is the '69 model year
The VIN can be used on '69-up and some '68 blocks can help verifiy the casting and engine ID dates
