Big plastic bucket.

With the lid wired on . Something stiff , like a piece of 1/2" or 3/4" inch plywood in the bottom and LOTS of packing , put the chuck itself in a plastic bag and INSURE it .

BETTER YET with a metal bucket. I have seen and heard of LOTS of those plastic ones breaking even shattering in this colder type weather.

IF the bucket breaks or falls apart ..the shipper WILL decline any claims .. ferr-sure.

I've shipped two this year (WA to FL). Plastic bucket, Pile-O- Shop Rags in the bottom to soften the ring gear on a cushion of rags, place plastic bucket inside a steel bucket of similar size, cover top and bottom with wood or whatever is handy that is stiff and supportive, stick a GOOD label on BOTH buckets, then wrap the entire mess in cardboard, tape well, add 3rd label to cardboard. Both made it with zero issues, FED EX Ground was cheapest.

I used a milk crate

zip tied it in there, the yoke poked up out of the corner a little

I wraped it in plastic shrink wrap and cut a cardboard box up and taped it all around it

stuck the addy on a sent it to ARK...cost about 40 bucks

should have seen the ups lady throw it over her head on to a slid table to go out to the warehouse

the 2 liter bolt holders work good for pistons and rods storage also, they come with 8 holes

what ever you pack it in I have found that wrapping the gears in a good plastic bag and filling around it with expanding foam gives good support.

Worst thing to get is something packed with loose newspaper come to your door.

Make sure there is no movement in the container you are using after packing.

remember...

NO MOVEMENT IN THE BOX!

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I shipped one to Fla. from Virginia. I opened a cardboard box to lay flat, I then rolled the center section up taping securely as I went. It was covered in several layers of cardboard by the time I was done. Arrived safely and was very compact. Yes, UPS was about $50 two years ago.

I shipped one up to ID. Went to Wallymart, bought a plastic cooler ($15 bucks?). Sat inside just perfect. Zipped tied lid down. Slapped the label on it.

Worked excellent. Beats fartin around.

hmmm...not a bad idea! I'm about to ship a 727, and need to figure out how to package it! big plastic bin at wallyworld for $10-$15 sounds like a good idea! (if they have one big enough...maybe a 30 gal. trashcan will work?

Just shipped one today to a board memeber. i used a milk crate, they lady at the desk asked me if they would take it like this. I said sure....It wasnt at a UPS hub, just a local hardware store that is a local pickup hub for ups. I layed it in the milk crate, wired it down, put a clear plastic bag on it tied it all up. Weight was 80 lbs. Cost me $49.69 which was going to a buisness adress, she said she would call me if they wouldnt except it...I will know tomarrow.
