I just bought a 1973 Duster this weekend. I'm really confused. The vin tag says VL23C3B...which means its coded for a slant 6. I thought okay, there's a 318 in it right now, so thats not the original engine. Now here's what is confusing me. The vin number is VL29C3B like I've stated. It says that on the vin tag AND fender tag. BUT, on the fender tag, there's a code...E44. I did a fender tag decode and it came up as 318 2BBL. So my car is coded for a 318 2BBL AND a Slant 6. Is this possible? ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/2231195-dggif.gif)

Cody, check the VIN stamping again. It is not unusual for the tail of the "G" to be stamped so lightly that the G looks like a "C".
You corrected it later in the post but just to confirm...the dash does say VL29 and not VL23 correct?

Don't take this the wrong way, but.... with a car like this, it really doesn't matter one bit. Whatever is in it, thats what it is (as long as its done correctly).

Car's not a gold mine because it came with a 318 stock instead of a slant, but it is just neat to know.
