I have a 68-69 B-body AM thumbwheel radio that plays but I can't change the tuning using the thumbwheel. The push buttons do change the channel, but that's it. I took the top cover off and I noticed that thumbwheel seems to try to turn the brass tuning gear, but the shaft to the gear just slips in place. Any ideas ???

Sounds like the nylon/plastic gear inside is broken. You should be able to remove the chrome face of the radio and then take out the roller. It will be hard to replace or fix the gear if it indeed is broken. Maybe there's a source for a replacement part?

Those things have an adjustable clutch inside the radio (they all do). The cllutch disengages when you push a button. It should have an allen set screw...

I just took another look with the face plate off and I can see a small white plastic gear that is in the middle of the tuning thumb-wheel. It's that gear that is slipping when I turn the tuner wheel. I'm not sure if it slipping due to some down stream binding or if it has just come loose on the thumb-wheel.

Trust me, it's the clutch. Take the top off the radio and you will see it...

I have seen that plastic gear split on more than one radio , I usually rob them from AM radios to fix AM/FM radios that were broken.

When mine were bad, the gear was cracked, causing it to stretch and the teeth of the gears not engaging properly. I would slide the gear off and attempt to "super clue" it. It worked sometimes, but as well, just cracked again. Maybe with some precision, one can "plastic weld"..

Now, there may be some hidden other problem causing the gear to push against resistance and hence, cracking...

This is a common problem with the thumbwheel radios .
The plastic gear splits on the tuning wheel , allowing it to slip.
I have dealt with this problem at least a thousand times, and I'm not joking .
Let me know if you need help with it .

I do see the clutch when I take the top off the radio. The question I have is. Is there an adjustment that needs to be made to the linkage or clutch. Can this problem be fix normally without replacing parts?
I know that I could send the radio in for repair, but that is not going to happen due to being short on cash at this time.

There is a set screw. Loosen it, release a little tension by pushing a button and move it. It might take a little trial and error to get it absolutely right, but it's not hard.

If it's slipping at the tuner clutch, first lossen the set screw and repostion it slightly closer inward to create more tension on the tuning clutch. Also you may have to clean the assembly of any oils and "recondition" the rubber so it will have friction again. However, your problem is going to be a broken plastic gear found behind the tuner thumbwheel.
They ALL break. I have had at least 1,000 68-9 B and A body thumbwheel radios come through my shop . This is something I see everyday .

Listen to this , this is 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999% the problem, if you can turn the thumbwheel and do not see the plastic gear turn with the thumbwheel no amount of adjusting/cleaning of the clutch is going to fix it.

Well, that is my problem. The plastic gear that is located in the middle of the thumbwheel is not turning when I rotate the thumbwheel. What locks the plastic gear to the thumbwheel? Is it non repairable once it starts to slip there?
