Can this be responsible for my hopelessly dim dash lights? I have tried new bulbs but they did not help. Any way to test the dimmer?

thanks

Likely culprit as the resistance winding can break or connectors erode over time. If you have a voltmeter, you can check resistance - should be gradual change in resistance as you move the thumbwheel.

ps...if you need one, I have a real nice one on ebay right now (70runner)

It is the most likely culprit.

It is not unheard of to place a jumper to bypass the dimmer to see what the dash lights would look like with a good one in place. A subset of those people have been known to leave the jumper in and call it good.

I think there was a "how-to" article in Mopar Muscle a few months back on that issue. They showed an easy way to fix the problem I think. Take a look at some back issues and see.

No pix..
But simple.

Pull of the connector, it has 3 terminals, 2 go to the dimmer rheostadt I think they are Orange and 1 goes to chassis ground. One can verify very easily with a continuity tester.

To briten the dash lites, U make a short jumper lead, 4" long out of #12 guage wire and 0.25" male tab connectors at each end. Plug this into the 3 way connector, where the 2 Orange wires go now a full 12V will go to the dash lites for max briteness..

Next connect a single wire 4", 0.25" tab connectors 1 male & 1 female. The single male tab terminal goes into the remain vacant 3rd terminal in the 3-way connector. And the other end goes back to the dimmer switch terminal where the 3rd terminal went. This is for grounding when the dimmer switch is rotated fully to the Dome lit position.

Hope that helps..

I don't think I've ever dimmed down my 68 Cuda dash lights. Even when driving across country for 48 hours straight with my bloodshot eyeballs dried wide open.

or you can buy a rebuilt unit. i got one for $50 including shipping from 70runner, (i believe that is his login name both here and on ebay). installed it and it works great. someone else on the board, at the same time, got one from him, and his works perfectly as well.
