I have a 2010 Sebring Limited with 48000 miles and love it. We've had it a good while though we bought it used. Almost overnight it developed a thump, knock, clunk thing in the front end. It seems to be there only at low speed and rough ground doesn't seem to make it worse. When it happens, it feels like somebody is pounding the steering shaft with a hammer. We checked all the regular stuff, BJs, tie rods, struts, etc. We're now thinking steering rack even though it feels tight and smooth. We sepperated the steering shaft where it goes through the floor/fire wall and lubricated it. My mechanic says it's a very common problem on GM cars. It seems to have helped but it's still there. Any thoughts or ideas before I invest in a new rack?

Check the controls arm bushings.I know the rears on older ones used an aluminum mount for the struts that fell apart also. Its been a while since Ive seen a 10 underneath but the bushings are known to go on the older ones.Rocky

The only other thing we found was the rack bolts would come loose.Unless the rack is hard to turn I doubt thats the problem. The steering joints usually make turning hard if bad also.GMs did have a squeak and a small clunk. We saw a ton of them.Call Chrysler and see if there is a TSB on the car.Rocky

Had one last week would only do it over sharp bumps. Ended up being the front struts.
Have you also checked the sway bar bushings and links?

Checked struts, strut bushings, sway bar bushings, we found everything just like new. I'm leaning toward there being some kind of isolator between the intermediate steering shaft and the rest of the shaft that is worn out.

My 08 was making bad noises and ended up being the PS wheel bearing.

At this point, it doesn't feel or sound like a wheel bearing, but, I'll watch it. Thanks

its the sway bar links that bolt to the strut..to check you have to turn the wheel all the way and stick your arm and hand and grab and wiggle it..you will find the ball ends loose..they will only be loose when the car is on the ground..when raised on a lift the wheels hang and the sway bar ends pull..that's why they will be tight..its a clunking noise over bumps, driveways etc...

This was my first thought too. Not it though. I wish it were, it's an easy fix.

Nope. Had a Neon that had bad strut bushings and it was bad too. This noise and thumping is all coming from around the steering wheel. It's not the U joint in the tilt part of the steering shaft, we checked that too.

Does the noise start right away when its cold or after its warmed up?
If your steering shaft checks out ok, Its possible there is a problem with the rack internally.

It's very random, it might go for days and be as quiet as a mouse. It seems most likely to do it at very low speeds, in town, between stop signs. Seems like you never hear it out on the open road at speed. The rack feels tight, along with everything associated with it. This is a head scratcher.
