Wendy, I'm home.
My exhaust guy talked me out of using the dynomax superturbos I had purchased and I ended up with magnaflows on the RR. It is too loud and now I'm looking to quiet it down because I am using ear plugs every time I go for a cruise so I don't have ringing ears for a day or two after.

Engine is 505" 10.2 compression XS290S cam with 2" Doug's headers, 3" pipes with an 'H' then 3" out to the chrome tips.

When I let him talk me out of the super turbos his argument was about the sound. Now he's telling me he thinks the exhaust pulses will destroy a turbo style muffler and he's really dragging his feet on trying to find a more quiet muffler.

Please shoot me some ideas, I really want to be able to drive it without plugging every time.

Thanks,
Frank

Magnaflows are nothing but straight through glass packs, its no wonder its loud. Guys around here have had excellent results with Borla XR1 mufflers. Use an X pipe if you can.

X pipe it and add the fabulous Dynomax Ultra-Flo's welded mufflers. You won't be disappointed with neither the exhaust tone or the bad to the bone exhaust flo.
Those cubes need to breath, but it doesn't have to be a Paul Revere while out on the town.

I second the the vote for XR1's. Their new xs 3" muffs would be good too.

I have Dynomax Super turbos and a TTI x pipe on my 517, love the sound.

Go to YouTube and type in Wizerulz for sound clips.

I like the Ultraflows too, but on a 700 horse motor with 12:1 and a roller on a tight lobe spread they're too loud for my tastes, to me they'ed be fine on a 10.5:1 600-625 horse 500 inch, the super turbos were almost too mellow on my old 508....opinions vary though. My new motor with Ultraflows and bullet muffs as resonators would be fine....or maybe the VT's would also be good at part throttle

Sounds like you like a mild mello sound. Dynomax super turbos and and x pipe will do exactly what you want.

I ran 2 1/2" super turbos with an H pipe for years they were real quiet nice low throaty sound almost but not quite too quiet.

I now have 3" X pipe and welded ultra flows still mello and quiet just right for me.

this is with what i have now

You need a chambered muff to kill noise OR a very large
case that double walled(and I dont mean flowmasters)..
a straight threw with the holes only takes out certain
frequency pluses ... also I assume you have them in
the stock location... the turbo style muffs work
pretty good in that location.. if you move them back
to the bumper you can get away with a different
style because the exhaust is cooler

Its been a while and can't get to the receipt for the mufflers I originally supplied, which is in a file cabinet in a storage unit.

IIRC, I had supplied one of the following, seems like I had the 20" shell and he had them mocked up.

We looked at these again and he pretty much said the 5.5 x 11" cases were truck mufflers. Bobby, what are you using?

Will the 17744 do the job?

I would go with the 17769 if I were you... it has a
larger body all around to kill the noise better

I'm all ears on this subject.
I don't want an obnoxious level and I want to enjoy driving it too without killing the engines breathing. Do the fiberglass packed ones last?

+1

it will also flow better than the 17744 with more room for flow around the tubes inside the muffler

Sorry, but if you think magnaflows are loud with the setup you listed, the Borla XR-1's will be even harder to tolerate...they are not a quiet muffler (and imo I have always felt magnaflows are). I would try the dynomax ultra flows in the largest body you can fit, as they sound good but are quiet...Those and the magnaflows would be my choices for quiet, but if your current ones are too loud, maybe try ultra flows and some resonators as well?

I love XR-1's, but definitely not quieter than the magnaflows...and thats from personal experience using them...Just my

We looked at putting resonators before the tips but there is not enough room between the springs and gas tank. Maybe if I used a 2-1/2" tailpipe, but it has 3" to the tips now.

Will the 5.5"x11" case fit in the stock location on a '69 b-body? I don't think my exhaust guy is going to order in mufflers until I'm happy; I'd like to know they'll fit before we order them.

I have 2.5" x-pipe and the welded UltraFlows on a mild small block and it is far from quiet. If you don't like the Magnaflows don't get the Ultras! I think you are correct in going for the Superturbos and buy the case size so you can just swap out your current setup. Just my
BTW post up a video or sound clip before and after if you can!

Same problem here. 440 0.30 over with 10.8:1 comp and a street solid roller.
1.75" headers to 3" exhaust with h-pipe and magnaflows. 100db at idle IN the car
and 120db 1m behind the exhaust. bought the dynomax turbos (17769) and will put them under
coming weekend. will do some short video clips to compare both. right now I am driving with ear plugs only too.

I think the SuperTurbo is about the quietest 3" muffler that I know of. I wanted something quieter than that and had to goto 2-1/2" exhaust to find a quieter muffler.

Why not just add resonators? Don't they muffle the sound enough to take away from the loudness?
