Was thinking about doing a few things to my stock 440 crank I have to kinda "prep" it before taking it in to get the counterweights turned down and journals machined for my 400/451 build. Then I stumbled on to this write up from HR http://www.hotrod.com/howto/7234_crankshaft_prep/ and it pretty much says what I was already thinking. Dont know if I have the marbles to drill NEW holes in the rod pins though. My grinder does have a new disc and my safety glasses are clean...

Thanks for the positive response guys! What the hell right? Especially since with a much lighter rod/piston assembly than a stock 440, cleaning things up should only help it balance easier for my machinist.

I do a lot of that on my stuff... plus I turn the balance weights down on the lathe... then after that I take in for balance.. one thing they dont do that I have done on a few is to cut the back of the crank to more of a point(like the front).. think sail boat traveling through the water.. it separates the water in the front then lets it slide back together without a wake... unlike a power boat ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

I have a 400 block 451 C.i. motor in my shop now that I built for customer a long time ago, I treid to get him to have the stock 440 crank offset ground to BB Cheyy rod journal size and increase the sroke to 3.91, he wouldn't go for it I've had several stock 440 cranks for 440 blocks offset ground for the 3.91 stroke and used the aftemarket 7.100 long BB Chevy type rods I'll never waste another stock steel 440 or 426 Hemi crank again, unless it is for NHRA stocker or SS motor, it will be offset ground to at least 3.91 stroke, stroke it for power, maybe longer to 2.10 or 2.00 size
Cab I agree with your thinking 100%! This engine is not being built for low E.T. at the strip. It is for my road course/street/autox Dart and will be using a FAST EZ efi which is supposedly only capable of supporting 600hp. I already have the 72 block that I acquired about 15 years ago for free, ESP rods that I bought probably 10 years ago, a new set of 4.375/.990 1.32CH Diamond pistons I bought from a gent on here for $300 and as of this afternoon a slightly rusty forged 440 crank that was also free fifty free. Im on a pretty tight budget and so far im doing pretty good lol! If I started off with only a crankshaft and a block I would take your suggestions and go with them with no hesitation.
