I am trying to help a fellow member. He wanted the shoulder bolts from my 3/4 ton full floating axle. I don't need correct bolts just bolts that will fit and he wants these from my axle. The question is, are these grade 8 or grade 5. Being it is a drive train part on a heavy truck and there are 8 slashes on the head I believe they're grade 8. I have no problem giving him these bolts just need replacements that will hold up for my truck. Normally I would just go with grade 8 but they are kind of expensive, and I need 16 of them.
Thanx guys in advance.

Notice it has a smaller head and is a shoulder bolt.
This is the bolt in question.

6 lines = Grade 8.

8 lines would be Grade 10 but there is no official standard for that. I think the bolts are Grade 8.
Better have a recount!

So, 6=8 & 8=10 almost makes sense cause it doesn't make sense.
Now you were right, I miss counted. Now lets all count together 1,2,3,4,5,6&7 go figure. Maybe the number is different cause of the small head. It's a 7/16th shoulder bolt with a 9/16th head.

I would put grade 8 bolts AND grade 8 flat washers if your going to do away with the original shouldered bolts.
The old rear ends had tapered sleeves that locked the axle to the hub, that was the reason for the shouldered bolt, you will need the flat washer to lock the sleeve and not damage the bolt head.
Its only money, you can't take it with you. Gene

Gene, if your talking about the cone shaped sleeves with the slot. That was on the old axle I removed. I suppose I didn't make that clear. It has studs and nuts. This is the 84 axle I replaced the original with. It uses smaller than usual hex head shoulder bolts.
pictured above. I replaced them with grade 8 bolts and grade 8 lock washers.
After reading the first response, and rethinking this, I agree it's not worth a few cents to cheap out.
Thank you for your time. All answers are appreciated.

Pictured here is the old stud set-up.

Good idea. Chances are, he will get cocky, as he thinks he got away with something. Once caught on your property the LOE my want to revisit this case as well. Hope so. Happy hunting.

In my county "beat him up" = 6 months on huber if your lucky.
Doesn't matter if he is trespassing, or thieving, or what ever.
Of course I wasn't really serious about killing some one, in case anybody is concerned.
