I don't remember for sure if it is without looking at a sheet but I think you should have a 2998328 shroud. If there is a column for it it would list 28.

It's not on the BS and, there shouldn't be one on the car. Should be a solid 24 fan and a 59 spacer only.

Are we talking 383 or 440, or does it make a difference? My brother owns a '70 383 auto R/T Challenger with a 22" rad, it has a shroud but I do not see where it appears anywhere on the buildsheet. The fan is listed as 24 and the fan spacer as 10. I agree with KissAlien that the part number for the shroud would be 2998328 and there is no column for shroud and also no '28' anywhere else on the sheet.

I think, if a Coolant Recovery Overflow System option was available & chosen, again, not sure in '70, that that would dictate a shroud in the package option. Let the research begin.

Not true, at least on a B-body. My '70 GTX is 440 auto with no a/c has the 22" rad opening. Came with the original 22" radiator and shroud.

With a/c is another story as well as the HD cooling package or some 4 speed or rear gear packages.

You're deviating from the OP's specific question. We're NOT talking about B bodies, this is an E body question.

If you looked at the link I provided it clearly states B/E use the same 22" radiator with 440 and automatic.

70 E Body 22" Rad yoke: 2998957 383 CI 2BBL, 2998960 383 CI 4BBL. Auto trans. Those were the only two 22" rads available FOR AN E BODY with a BB engine and A/T.

There is ample evidence that 22" inch radiators were in 440 e-bodies, don't get cranky at me for pointing it out.

For the 2nd time, he's NOT asking about B Bodies, why are you being so adamant about dragging B Bodies into this question ?

Tony, what engine are you asking about ?

And sure, I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

Not cranky either.

For the second time you are not listening.

B and E bodies came with 22" radiators with 440 automatic, you made the blanket statement they DO NOT which isn't true. I was just pointing out this was incorrect and pointed out that e-bodies used the same part number radiator as a b-body.

Did you even look at the links I provided?

I'm merely trying to help out, not engrave mis-information on a stone tablet.
Very cool. It's all a learning process, lkie everything else. And as we all know anything is possible with Ma. I'd like to see the BS on those.
So what depicted getting a shroud then ? 6BBL and Shaker w/ 440 w/ A/T ?

I would go out on a limb and *theorize* that if a car had a 440 with a 22" radiator that it came with a shroud to maximize the cooling with the smaller radiator.

Tossing a shroud on had to be cheaper than a 26" rad, I know "back in the day" my 22" radiator was marginal with the miles that were on it.

A Chrysler engineer I'm friends with stated that a radiator loses something like 50% of its ability to shed heat in the first 4-5 years.

P.S. My GTX had the same fixed fan as the 440+6 car shown above, what a noisemaker that was.

FWIW, here is cooling system page from the 1970 service manual. It shows when shrouds were used. However it also shows only 26" rads with 440 engines as Scatcity said. As already said here, you never know with Ma Mopar.

hi all

if you look at the chart that moparfan just posted you can see that it contradicts itself

it list the 960 radiator as being a 26" under the 440 4bbl + 440 6bbl column, but listed as a 22" under the 383-4bbl column, when in fact it is a 22" radiator

as far as my original question, I would think the same would apply from B to E body.

to be exact it is a 70 e-body with a 440 and a 2998960 radiator, with a #224 fan + a 1.6" spacer.

let me ask this question, is there anywhere on a buildsheet that has a box or place to list if the vehicle would use a shroud?

thanks again
tony

^ but to go opposite to that, the parts manual says:

RADIATOR CORE FAN SHROUD B/J W/383, 440 Eng. W/22" Core W/O A/Cond. 2998328 (same as B body).

It also lists radiator:

B,J,R,W 70 440 22" No Air conditioning stamped 2998960 part # 2998957

Also the same as above for 383, but as well for 383 lists the same PART #, with 2998954 as a stamping # and 2998957 as a stamping # with A/C)...

So, my guess is that as a possibility, they ran out of some rads on the line. Shift supervisor ok'd a replacement, and those were used. It was noted, and made it into the final version of the parts book.

Now logic to me says, if you have a 440 in an E body, a shroud is a must...so I would think the ones that got the small rad, got a shroud (2998328).

I think on the BS if it listed a 22" (would that be 60?) you would get a shroud, or maybe if it was an export (Canada) car it could be X55? (radiator air shield 70-71)
