What Drift said, get an electronic reg & make sure it's making good ground contact. An electronic conversion will run with the OE electromechanical reg but the voltage spikes from how it operates ain't good for electronics plus they've been known to stick & full field the system.

Depends on what type alternator you have, 1 field terminal, or 2 field terminals? The regulators will be different for the 2 types of alternators.

What year vehicle? If it's a 69 or earlier with the "box" reg with a terminal on each side then yes (A) just get the electronic type replacement & someone on Moparts sells an electronic reg with a black cover that looks original if that is important & I think someone said the OE black cover will fit it for even more originality. If you have a later 2 field terminal alt with the (A) reg (OE electromechanical or electronic) just ground one of the alt field terminals. FYI if you have the later 2 field terminal alt & a '70 up "flat" reg in your stash you can trim the sides of it & redrill 1 mounting hole & it will nestle neatly into the firewall recess where the OE "box" reg once resided, just need the extra wire from the triangle reg connector to the 2nd field terminal on the alt (1 blue/1 green) & this may be the one you are referring to as looking like an ECU (it's ~half as thick as the ECU & has a triangle shaped plug in)

RR I think from his sig it looks like a 68.He needs the points looking type if it still has the one field wire alt.No need to run wires and drill holes with the electronic reg that replaces the old points type.Rocky

Yes an electronic "box" replacement reg would take care of this real easy & from what I understand most of the replacement "box" regs are now electronic but I'm not sure on that.

Easy to spot the electronic reg that replaces the points type. Its almost flat.No need for a tall cover. You can take an old cover and use it on them though so it looks stock.Rocky

The reason to use the new electronic reg instead of points is because they charge much better.Typically you dont have the light flicker and dimming.Plus no points to stick or burn.Ive driven Mopars since the 60s.The replacement reg is one great part. They also charge better than the points. The reg in the picture might be one of the new ones that have the large cover.Look at the back.If there is a resistor its points type. The replacements attach just like OE but are maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch high.Rocky
