Have a circa 1977 low compression 440 and Thermoquad that I'm putting in a D150 and wanting to upgrade intake manifold.. That's all I'm changing right now (camshaft and other upgrades later).. Which manifold would you folks recommend.. Truck will be a street driven cruiser.. Thanks..

this is what I tried with my 77 lopo 440.

1) stock cast iron intake with a holley spredbore/eddy600/750q-jet = no big deal would not spin tires off the line. done by 4800rpm. 10 mpg flat.

2) weiand action plus eddy600 - not much over stock performance. done at 4800 and choking. 10 mpg flat.

2)eddy RPM eddy 600- good lowend, will smoke the tires from a slight roll, revs well into 6200rpm range with stock cam nosed over 5200rpm, 12 mpg flat.

down side, slight bog on tip in of 2ndarys,600 seemed lean maybe/not enuff accel pump shot=cant get any bigger.

upside, swaped on a open spacer with a new q-jet, some tuning got the bog almost gone now, smokes them out the hole, q-jet tips with lots of torque.great throttle responce, cruzing 50 mph-2200rpm-3.23 gear-29x15x15 M/Ts picked up to 15 mpg flat. ( done 3 200 mile round trips to confirm mpg) anything over 2500 rpm sucks the gas but scratches like a 440 should.

3.91 drop it back to a flat 10 mpg no matter what cruz rpm/45 mph or less. but scratch it does

I have a holley street dominator to try also,I will give it a shot just because it is a spredbore intake, (I can loose the adaptor)

IMHO..go right to a rpm intake on that stock lopo 440, you wont be disappointed in it. and it has room to grow.

after seeing a couple whiplash 440s and a couple 360s(flat tappet) I think it is one of the best cams for a stock street duty SB or BB

I will let you know how the 318 roller whiplash works with a LD4B intake/q-jet carb real soon.

A tunnel ram will practically clear the hood

Lots of room and the RPM will be great for any upgrades you do later.

So how much difference in power will I notice going from the stock 318 to the stock low compression 440 with the Edelbrock RPM and stock truck manifolds? From what little I have read it seems I could really pick up a lot with a Whiplash cam? Headers maybe??? Thanks..

From a stock 318 to a 440 with Perf RPM it will feel like double the engine.
The rough idle gimmick cams like Thumpr or Whiplash do not rev me up. I'd go with something with 224 or so duration at 50 lift in the Hughes or Comp or Lunati Voodoo lines.

I am running a 77 model 440, stock heads, comp 268xe cam, eddy rpm intake, 600 eddy carb, good ignition and headers/2 1/2" duals. 3.23 gear 275 60 15s.
Gets 12 on hiway at 60-65.
Makes great power, pulls to over 6000 easily, but I don't squeeze the rpms that high often.
No comparison to a 318, haha.
