I had that problem with my '87. I just found a hole saw, drilled out the holes, and filled them with deeper cup holders (removable). They worked great!

(the ones that slip between the glass and frame) cut off the mounting arm, and put a blob of RTV on the bottom. set in the console cupholder. when it's dry, you're good to go. get tired of them, just pop them out. It was simply one of the best road trip vehicles. Sold it with 345,000 miles on the original engine...kept it longer and put far more money into than I probably should have. But because it was left to me by my grandfather, it had value beyond just being a nice mopar...
