Hey I did a little research and thought I had read that the Dot 5 fluid is easy on painted surfaces should it come in contact with them. My system is completely empty so I have the choice of which Dot to go with. Any input???

DOT 5 is the best! I have been using it for over 30 year with no problem. One car was parked for 23 years with DOT 5 in it, pulled it out of storage, fixed the motor and drove it from minnesota to florida and back without touching the brakes. Try that with DOT 3, you would be rebuilding the whole system from moisture damage.
Wilwood says not to use it in their brakes, I do anyway. No problems in 10 years with it in my wilwoods.

Go for it!

A lot of Dot 5s problems came years ago.The old seals and boots didnt like it.My buddy used it in his 69 and the master seal swelled.I used it in my 58 when I did all new brakes on my 58 HD in the early 90s.Its still in and works perfect.Dont mix it with other types.Rocky

Yep...

Been using it for many years...

I'd never go back to DOT 3...

DOT 4 user here. Never spilled a drop on paint, by accident anyway. Never had a fluid related problem. To me DOT 5 tries to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

I wonder how many no longer bother to respond to threads like this that pop up every 9? months, year after year, and how many people think incorrectly that little is left to be discussed?

Archiving one in depth brake fluid discussion would sure break the repeating cycle, IMO

This is not directed at OP or anyone special, but wonder if one searched first what they would find?

Same here, I run ATE DOT4 Super Racing Blue in my brake systems and hyd clutch set ups,...DOT5 is the preferred fluid for the collector/show car because it doesn't adsorb water, and being silicone based has an added advantage of a slightly higher boiling point than that of DOT3 and DOT4 fluids, and prolonged storage/non use makes it user friendly to the system...however DOT5 while not absorbing water/moisture, does absorb oxygen, which over a period of time makes the fluid aerated with micro air bubbles, causing a "spongy" pedal...

DOT4, is of the Glycol base, which puts it temperature operating wise, in the middle range of petroleum/mineral base DOT3, and Silicone DOT5, DOT4 is the preferred fluid for high performance braking systems, or systems that will see boiling points reached for extended time periods (as in road racing, or HP driving), where as DOT5 when nearing it's boiling point, if oxygen entrained, will diminish the line pressure in repeated braking, hence not often used in a performance braking system,...downside to DOT4 is it will absorb water, although at a much slower rate than than DOT3 fluids, there are modified DOT4 fluids, such as ATE Blue or Gold, that have higher/finer properties than "standard" DOT4's, but the costs are much higher, but the performance results are higher....

So, IMHO, DOT5 if your building a trailer queen, or garage ornament, showcar, anything of that nature...

DOT4 Racing fluids if your concerned with high/repeated performance braking use, and are using the car for it's intended purpose

I've run the gambit of fluids from DOT3 to DOT5 over the years, and while I like the paint protection that DOT5 offers, it pails in comparison to the repeated performance usage of modified DOT4's, anyone who's brought a braking system's fluid up to it's boiling point, and for extended periods will understand...

In 20 years of road time, with Dot 5 from day one, I've experienced no change in pedal firmness...

The system has been flushed one time...

Dot 5's advantages far outweigh its disadvantages...

If I start with everything new, I use dot 5. The worst part of it is the price. I think it has tripled in price since the first time I used it.

DOT 3 is NOT petroleum-based. DOT 3 and 4 are both glycol-based.

Checked it out at Pep Boys yesterday, Dot3 is 3.99, Dot 4 is 5.99 and Dot 5 is 9.99.
The price doesnt bother me too bad since I don't plan on replacing it for a long time maybe never.

I just finished bleeding the brakes on the Dart, brand new system with DOT 5 (da purple stuff ). Brakes seem to work, although it seemed more challenging to get the air out.

Trick is to not jar the bottle too much. It does tend to foam up if the bottle is jostled too much.

I use it in my hot rod, my "restoration", daily driver, etc. It is pricey but works great for cars that are irregularly driven.

So you drive your "daily driver" "irregularly"?

I don't buy into your senseless trolling. I remember way back when you used to be cool. Not sure what happened in your life to make you act like this? Let's pretend that's not my thumb.
