I have a 440/727 from a B-350 van chassis rv that I'm swapping into an 1985 D-150 2x4,swb.. The truck is a 318/904.. After pulling the 318/904 combo out I noticed the tailshaft is way shorter than the 727. Will this only require shortening of the driveshaft or??? Thanks in advance...

Measure from the trans mount pad to end of tailshaft on both trannies. To the best of my knowledge (and I could be wrong) all 727s are the same. I swapped a slant six
/833od to a 440/ 727. Same crossmember, and driveshaft.
The motor home units may be different. All I have ever dealt with is car/ pickup stuff .
I will admit, the bb 727s look looong!

Also in my swb 84, at one time it had a 904 behind the /6. I stuck it in there while I went thru the 833od. No driveshaft, or crossmember mods.
It was after I had put the 833 back in that I swapped to 440.
Again. Measure.

A normal 904 tailshaft is suppose to be 3" shorter then a normal 727 tailshaft. Everything is great until you get into trucks, Mopar offered a short tailshaft 727, but most had a bolt on flange instead of the slip in end on the driveshaft. Like said above, measure it. Gene

Does your truck have power brakes?

The 904 is shorter? Is the 727 a slip yoke?

They have a short tail shaft 727 that was used in campers Clubcabs Crewcabs and Divorced Transfercase Powerwagons(pre 75)

If I follow what your saying that you think that you need to find a swb for a tranny......that isn't correct cause swbs had long tailshaft trannies also.

If you have the short tailshaft 727 with the bolt on yoke you can make a driveshaft that slips in itself. I've seen people do it, I know a guy that bought is 74 A-body like that....that some one did that to already, it's even a sb car.

Can you post a picture of what you have so we can see it?

Ok.. I'll post pics soon.. What I'm thinking is my driveshaft is going to be too long... The driveshaft I have is from the 904 swb truck... Of course I will not buy anything until I mount up everything and make sure first... The 904 is definitely shorter than the 727..Thanks..

Going off what you said there I think that all you need to do is have that driveshaft shorten a little and rebalanced and you should be good to go.

He'll also need a 727 yoke. He is saying he only needs a shorter drive shaft. A driveshaft and yoke will work from a 833od

I have a drive shaft for a 904 in a 85 swb truck

I have a driveshaft for a 727 in a swb truck

I have a drive shaft with splined slip yoke for a 727 short shaft bolt on yoke.

I have run them all.

if the truck came with a 318/904..use the shift lever/TV lever from the 904 on the 727 for shifter linkage hook up. you may need to tweek the 904 TV linkage or find a 4-v 727 truck 1 piece TV linkage.

the auto trans lines will fit from the 904 to 727.

all you need to do is shorten the 904 swb drive shaft to fit the longer 727.

the 727 will need a bigger 727/a8333/a833OG slip yoke. slide yoke in till it bottoms out on tailshaft, measure from center of u-joint cap to center of u-joint cap then subtract 1" for a perfect fit.

the measurements can vary slightly when searching for a bolt in shaft, or if the truck has had cassis mods such as lowering/axle flips...they tend to shorten the shaft even more.

check the size of flex plate from the 904 TC to the 727 TC before you get it bolted to the engine. they are the same for all engines, TC bolt spacing/size dictates which flex plate to use.

best to mock the flex/TC together and mark with paint for ease of install later bolting it up.

good luck

He Jason a complete engine/trans setup already. Why would he need to measure flex plate?

only if the OD833 has the 727 size output shaft. Ive seen a 904 sized tailshaft version of the OD833 in an A body behind a /6..
