Drag Racing Likes and Dislikes You can throw this into the same category as the NHRA debate... Likes: - Fast street cars that actually get driven to the track - Fast muffled cars, street or race-only - NHRA Pro Stock --> Saw my first Pro Stock race in 1977 IIRC (Congrats AJ!) - Going fast on pump gas - Any cars that wheelie off the line - Top Sportsman and other fast "Run All Out!" bracket classes - "Heads up" classes - Stock and Super Stock cars running 11s and faster... always wished I could afford to run a competitive 440-6BBL stocker - Fast cars on limted tire sizes - "Doorslammers" - Drivers who get respect for hard work and results and don't turn into publicity whores - Drag racing in person... gotta be there for the sights, smells & sounds Dislikes: - Race cars that claim to be street cars but everyone knows really aren't - Slow and LOUD cars, street or race-only - NHRA Pro Stock --> I can't relate to what they race anymore (Sorry AJ!) - Going slow on race gas - Trucks... people seem to have forgotten that they're meant for towing real race cars and hauling junk, not racing - Fast cars that barely even lift a tire off the line 'cuz they're strapped down with wheelie bars or set up to "creep" off the line - Index classes where throttle stops knock 3 seconds off the ET of the cars right off the line, rather than letting them run all out against a fast dial-in - Stock and Super Stock cars running 12s and slower... might as well be watching the Street ET class - Slow cars with huge freaking tires, especially those that "crutch" a poor chassis setup by sticking big meats on the back to band-aid it - "Pipecleaners" - Anyone whose last (or maiden or in-laws') name is Force - Drag racing on TV... just doesn't "translate" well to the toob

Well.... I'm glad I made 6 of your "likes" while using only 1 of your "dislikes.'
There's nothing like driving to the track with the AC on, racing it and beating trailered and noisy race cars, then driving home again with the AC on. I was amazed at how many of the racers at PINKS noticed that I drove it in the gate instead of trailered it.

I'm pretty much in agreeance with you. I'm not a big fan of fully tubbed cars with cages and racing seats and harnesses and aluminum dash panels. I like a stock interior car with small tires that can boogy. True Street/Strip cars strike my fancy the most. I'm more interested in a true street/strip car that runs 12.70s than some pro street circus that runs 9s. Oh and FAST 4 speed cars
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

Cars that are 15 seconds or slower winning a bracket race. It is supposed to be a race, that means go fast!

Like: competitive racing, Brackets, index, heads up, I appreciate it all.
Dislike: Noisy junior dragsters and the parents that come along with them. Nostalgia stuff that oils the track down every pass.

I dont really like the circus much
But I like the clowns. Go figure. I have one dislike that stems from working at a small town 1/8th mile track......guys who drive their street car , complete with rotted out quarter panels out to race and leave everything from chunks of crud to small tools in their wake when they launch. Maybe the only thing that got me swearing out loud to a driver. I didn't even mind the guy in his dirt modified making laps because he washed it off befoe hand , and it didn't mark it's trail. I know not everybody can own a show car. But this seriously annoyed me.

Likes...
Stock/Super Stock racing
Fast heads-up door cars Nostalgia fuel cars (AA/FD, AA/FC, AA/FA)
The way it USED to be in the '60s and '70s with the camaraderie (IE: a spirit of friendly good-fellowship) in the sport of drag racing.
Dislikes...
The current over-paid clown-hood that's "in charge" of the NHRA (notice I did NOT say 'leadership' as it doesn't exist).
The preference of the so-called 'professionals' (that don't often act like it) over the 'little-guy' racers that make up the back-bone of this dying sport.
The absence of Buster Couch as chief starter at National Events (more personality)
The ridiculous cost factors that are diminishing this sport (gate and entrance fees, fuel, constant bi-annual replacement of safety equipment and other such SFI rubbish, food prices at the concessions stands, etc)
The lack of payout/'prize-money' for the sportsman/class racers
Absence of Modified Production, Gassers and real street roadster classes (yup, more old-timer stuff) that made this sport more unique and enjoyable to watch.
I had a couple of friends tell me about one of the National Events they attended last year and while they were browsing the pits one noticed the absence of real happiness and joy, especially among the class racers. He claimed they were very serious in their demeanor and it appeared they were not enjoying themselves. Hmm, maybe it has to do with the pressures of all the above!?! But then again, what do I know? I'm just an old guy that's been a class racer and round fodder since '71, hahaha!!!

I've noticed at many of the grudge races the car owners are typically respectful of each other, it's usually the bystanders and "posse" that throw the insults around, and they usually don't have a car (or one quick enough to worry about).
