Have a friend in need of new gas tank. Does anyone have opinions, suggestions on the best most correct gas tanks for sale? He has a 70 Challenger, Hamtramck built 9/19/69.

I think all the vendors sell Spectra Premium fuel tanks don't they? If that's the case Rock Auto with their 5% discount code is your best bet.

Not all vendors do , there is a line of asia import tanks out there also.

But I second Rock auto , bought an A body tank for a friend there earlier this year , cheapest price I could find .

Here's a related question.

If one is to buy Spectra fuel tank, are the Spectra fuel tank straps a good idea to get as well, or should one do their best to clean up and reuse the factory straps?

Please tell us your experiences with your fuel tank replacement and restoration. What did you buy? What did you not buy? What did you do to restore back to a correct factory look?

Thanks!

Save your original lock ring for the fuel pickup , the new ones do not seem to work as well as the originals.

X2,the lock ring that comes with the sender is thin and doesn't hold the sender tight and the aftermarket senders are total crap.I have 2 new senders here one china and one mexico and neither are accurate.

Does anyone sell a "good" sender to go with the tank?

I bought three gas tanks; first came dented, second was painted and not galvanized and third was correct. Based on the stickers and the part numbers on the parts that came with, I strongly suspect that they were all Spectra tanks.

The galvanized Spectra didn't need anything, galvanized with an oily coating is correct and will last forever the way I use the car. I used their straps too, but they APPEARED to be bare steel so I clear coated them...so far, so good. Most factory straps are badly rusted so it'd be pretty hard to find a nice set of those, I imagine.

I have a Spectra tank as well. I bought stainless straps for mine. They needed a little work in order to get them to snap up into the trunk braces but it didn't take long. I used the lock ring that came with the tank. So far I haven't had any issues but I still have the original if a problem arises.

I bought my Spectra gas tank for my 72 Charger off eBay from stampedingbuffalo, of course it's cheaper to buy it in the States and have it shipped to Canada, even though it's Canadian made there is not much choice as to where to purchase it here and it's over $400. I paid $175 for the tank and $105 for shipping to Ontario Canada.

Here's the new tank, what a beauty.

I was doing a little poking around and found 3 suppliers of gas tanks, Evans-fischer, spectra, and Sheppard auto parts, are they all the same tank? Tim

Spectre is the only one you listed that actually makes gas tanks.

Just got the new Spectra tank, straps and also a Spectra sending unit. The sending unit not too impressive, really light gage. I tested the resistance with the float down to up measures 10 to 90 ohms. Does anyone know if this is accurate or should it go down to zero ohms?

Spectra is the only game in town who actually makes them. Personally I dont think they are that great but when your the only one you can cut corners and make a half *ssed part that people will buy because their is no other choice.

Tank straps from them were just bare steel and made in china... half the thickness of the OE parts. edges of the replacement tank were just a sharp cut and not rolled/finished like OE. Fuel filler neck vent pipe was just a stub going into the top edge of the tank, soldered in at the wrong angle, OE was a full pipe going to the center of the tank near the rollover valve and coming out pointed 90* sideways to clear the frame rail.

Before you install it and the tank run a long jumper from the rear of the car so you can test it while watching the fuel guage.I have one spectra made in mexico and one china made and the china made one is actually more accurate than the spectra one.
