The 98.5-02 24V automatics had a lot of electrical gremlins from the start. As evidenced by RhinoDart's reply and mine, there can be more than one reason for a hunting tranny. My problem was the torque convertor locking and unlocking in overdrive. Mine would jump about 50-75 RPM, so I did the cheapest trick possible - wrap the wire from the battery to the alternator in a few layers of heavy foil, then wind electrical tape around the whole thing to completely cover the foil and seal up the ends. That was shortly after I bought it in 2007, nearly six years ago. It's never happened again. The problem stems from an erratic voltage signal sensed by the lockup solenoid. When that happens, it opens and closes repeatedly. The battery wire "leaks" voltage, that's why wrapping it helps. Seriously, try it. It's nearly free, and free is good. BTW, 2100 RPM is about 300 higher than the sweet spot. Your fuel consumption will greatly increase above 1800.

My friends 98.5 had a similar problem... it's been a few years since I drove it, so can't remember exactly. But he ended up having the transmission rebuilt and the sensor(s) replace on the trans and still did it. His ended up being the computer. Pretty hard to find a good one, so he sent it out to get rebuilt and its been fine since.
