If the piston skirt is hitting the bore wall, it obviously isn't a good thing
GM had massive issues from 99-2003( at least) because they cheaped out and started assembling engines( 4.8/5.3/6.0) in batch mode. They got all engines bored the same, used all same pistons, and just assumed every engine would end up with identical clearances, instead of checking/ building on a case by case, each engine is unique format, like they had previously.
Piston slap greatly effects the resale value of a vehicle that has this issue.
Given owners who have sued GM over this issue have either forced GM to buy back the unit, or offer a cash settlement.
GM didn't do this because the engines were " right"
I suspect people that have this issue have to like it, because the alternative is to tear the engine down and fix it so it's right

I thought the same thing, but I double checked the pistons with a mic and the cylinders with a bore gauge. I actually had to order 1 piston. One was damaged when I took it out of the box, so I have an extra to play with! I ordered the same part # so I'm sure they are 0.040 pistons. That is also what I spec'd to Indy Cyl when I ordered the block from them. I'm positive about the clearance there. To me, the noise doesn't change at all cold or hot. But, it doesn't seem to hurt either, engine runs good. I just hate the noise. It sounds like something is coming apart! I'm going to try and upload a vid to U-Tube later. Thanks, Jeff

COULD THE PISTONS BE HITTING the heads ?? quench to close ?
i had a bbc that sounded like piston slap & it ended up they were hitting the heads.

Hello, It is actually a 195 stat. Temps normally run about 195 - 200 depending on the ambient. I've unhooked my electric fans and let it get to about 230, same noise. Jeff
I can`t consider piston slap "normal" w/modern stuff within spec. Sounds like a problem to me..........
same here Dom. I wouldn't run a motor with piston slap it's not normal or good.

Being he checked the piston to bore and knows what that was I'm thinking he is looking in the wrong area... could it be the pins.. I dont think so.. maybe the conv bolts are just long(the head) and touching the block

What lifters are you using? If they are Comp 822-16s, they will be noisy hot or cold no matter what you do or change. You say Crower cam but those lifters, if Crower labeled, could be anything from good to bad. Ive always wanted to try Johnson Hy-lifts but my next combo is gonna be a roller.
