if I want to convert the mid 80s truck to a 4 speed and not the 4-speed OD alum case unit.

what yr and body style car would I be looking for?

any B or E body will work. You will need the truck specific shifter mounting bracket and hump extension, and hopefully the stick floorpan. .

I am truckless..

It sounds like you mean 833 based with "normal" 1'st gear? Just in case I'll mention the NP435. Its a 4 speed with a super low "grandma" 1'st gear. Its adapted to SB and BB. In everyday driving without heavy load or trailer it functions as a 3 speed. Pretty wide gear spreads. That said its a tough and capable transmission rated up to around 20,000# GVW. A "serious" PU transmission. I had one that lasted through three engine re-builds/replacements on a hard used '70's truck with 360.

My 435 has handled chirping tires from 2nd to 3rd for quite some time. 33" tires and 4.10 gears. First is useless unless you're pulling something or climbing a hill (in 4wd).
