Thanks guys. My water pump didn't come with the heater inlet tube, but I bought one being that it's only sealed with an o-ring. I reckon I'll add some black RTV to that as well. I just got done with flushing the system, so I'll dig into it when it cools off outside. For some reason, after I flushed the system, now my heater doesn't work, but the A/C blows cold...even when the knob is turned all the way to heat.  Not sure it's related...

I prefer a good gasket that was cut correctly to match the parts being mated & spray it with Permatex "high tack" part # 99MA iirc in the blue can. Goes on light/even & is extremely tacky & seals very well & holds the gasket in place. LA pump to cover gaskets can go on backwards & at first glance it looks OK but if you flip it it follows the part perimeter much better. Try it both ways & you'll see what I'm saying. Not sure if mags are the same just a caveat

the pipe for the heater hose came with my wp, so I didn't have to waste time figuring how to get it out of the old one.
I can't remember if the bypass nipple was cast into the new one or I had to put it in, but it came with the wp too.
That's what I do. In theory, gasket alone should be enough but the thin layer of sealer is insurance against leaks. The O ring shouldn't really need any sealer. RTV could even interfere with the O ring seal if the nipple moves around a little.

That's the route I ended up taking, and all turned out well. Andrew, I didn't know what the "heat by-pass hose" was until I got in there. It was deep under the accessories, so it got replaced. I know the job seems pretty rudimentary, but it's been a looong time since I played with a water pump. Thanks to all for the tips!
