NAPA used to have Hemi replacement mufflers.I had them on the 65.Now I run Summits stainless. They arent factory quiet but not loud. They are just mellow but they have a sweet sound when you get into the go pedal. That and they never rust.Rocky

a basicly stock lowcompression 340 with 2 1/4" pipes will probably like some dynomax superturbo mufflers, pretty quiet but with alitle rumble like a musclecar should sound.

The turbo quiets it down a bunch also. To the OP, like said, pipe size has a lot to do with it. Generally a 2-1/4 muffler is quieter than a 2-1/2, a 2.5 is quieter than a 3" in the same application. an X pipe changes the tone and seems a bit quiter than an H-pipe that tends to deepen the tone. Like most things, there is no single answer.

Well.... you can have quiet, performance, small size. Pick any two!

I'm wondering what to use on my '72 Dart 451. So far I have headers and a 3" Summit X-pipe. There is now a fuel cell in the trunk so all that space underneath (where the stock tank used to be) is available.

like i said, for your application some dynomax superturbos will be the quietest best flowing muffler you can find anything quieter will restrict power and anything more open will be louder but not gaining any more power.

i have over 10years of experience in the exhaust bussines and helping someone with a mufflerchoice is difficult to say the least but i feel confident you would like these mufflers

All our performance testing and sound testing indicates that the large case Dynomax Super Turbo "Hemi" style is best. 2.5" in and out, offset-center 17748; and the 2.5" in and out offset-offset 17749. Flow well and sound good and are pretty darn quiet. Some resonation will be present depending upon engine and tailpipes, and crossover style but overall, these are some of the best.

The hemi super turbo mufflers quiet my 496 quite well. You could also try the dynomax VT muffler for the ultimate in cruise quiet until you hammer it.
