Will start with a 4.30 and 29.5 X 11.5 slick as that is whats presently in the car.... but thinking 4.88 might be in the cards. 1/4 mile racing.

408 strokerdart, you're running a glide right? A friend has a w8 car and going though the traps at 8000. His engine builder told him to gear the car to go though the traps at 7400.hes running 4.56 with a 28 in tires with a 3 speed trans. Should he drop down to a 4.10?

Not all W8/9 heads are the same. In fact there is about as much difference in the way these heads are ported as comparing a stock set of J's to a fully ported W2. The point I am making is there are a ton of variables. Bore and stroke would determine your gear as much as the size of the runners and valves.

I ran a set of Arringtons that would require similar characteristics as a Circle track W8/9. The engine was 4.125X4.125 I turned it 8,000 through the traps. If it had been smaller it would have needed to turn more to be productive. Camshaft changes this as well.

My CFE W8 on a 468 was only good for 8,600 RPM on the motor. With nitrous it was good for more. The same heads on a 3.800 stroke 421 needed to turn well over 9,000 to make the best runs.

With the powerglide I ran a 4.88 with a 33" tire for best results with nitrous. NA it did not make a ton of difference between 4.88 to 5.88. But, the cam and converter combo was way off and running an engine like this with a powerglide is difficult to get the best performance.

I'm not sure on his set up, but mine is only good for about 8200rpm max and I think a steeper gear might perform just a little better for me in the 1/8th mile. As Leon suggested, this combo with the glide probably isn't the best for maximizing ET potential. I have gotten it to preform pretty well though.....with lots of experimentation.

With that said, I haven't seen big changes in trap RPM with gear swaps that seem pretty big in difference of ratios.

Or go to a taller tire... that gives him 2 good things...
a bigger foot print for the launch and it will reduce
the rpm..... if he can fit the taller tire in there

It is a new combo this year, new top end and dropped gear to a 3.91 from a 4.30. It would trap 7200 with 295/65/15 drag radials with old w9rp and the 4.30 gears. Best pass was a 9.55 on motor. Really trying to get after it with spray this year.

I think he's going to change the gear to a 4.11.after the 1/8 the just moves but not pulling. It just seems like it's dead. Alot of rpm but not going anywhere.
