I have a 340 I'm freshening up that has factory cast iron heads, typical replacement Fel Pro composition head gaskets, and ARP head studs.
What should I torque them to?

Odd question....but will the studs clear factory hi-po exhaust manifolds?

I know this motor doesn't need studs, but they're already on/in the motor. Was an old drag car, but it's the original numbers matching engine. Just taming it down w/ a different cam and putting factory manifolds back on it.
I do have a set of factory head bolts off an old 318 at the shop I could use on it though.
Thoughts?

144-4001 spec. HEX NUTS
NSTALLATION METHOD FOR HEAD STUD KITS
200,000
PSI 1/2 inch
Diameter
1. To ensure proper thread engagement and accurate torque
readings, clean ALL threads in the block. Chase if
necessary with ARP Thread Chaser.
2. Clean and inspect all hardware prior to installation. Look
for obvious defects or shipping damages, plus proper fit,
length and dimension.
3. If the cylinder head studs protrude into a water jacket,
lubricate the block threads of the studs with ARP
THREAD SEALER.
4. Screw studs into the
block “HAND TIGHT ONLY”.
NOTE: LOCTITE MAY BE USED IF A PERMANENT
MOUNTING OF THE STUDS IS PREFERRED. THE
FASTENERS, HOWEVER, MUST BE TORQUE
D PRIOR TO THE LOCTITE SETTING UP.
5. Install the cylinder head(s) and check for binding or misalignment.
6. Lubricate the stud thread
s, nuts and washer
s with ARP ULTRA-TORQUE F
ASTENER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT.
Then install the washers and the nuts on
to the studs and tighten them hand tight.
ARP recommends using the
ARP ULTRA-TORQUE FASTENER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT th
at is provided with each kit as opposed to
motor oil. This is due to higher friction on the stud
s as well as inconsistencies in the clamping force of
the fasteners when motor oil or other low quality lubricants are used.
PRELOAD (TORQUE) RECOMMENDATIONS
7.
Following the manufacturers recommended torque sequence tighten the nuts
in three equal steps to
110
ft lbs
with ARP ULTRA-TORQUE FASTENER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT.
Note:
ARP Ultra-Torque Fastener Assembly Lubr
icant has been specifically designed to reduce tension preload scatter and
eliminate the need to cycle high performance engine fasteners
before final installation. ARP Ultra-Torque far surpasses all
requirements offered by previous ARP lubr
icants in terms of fastener preload
repeatability and performance lubricating
properties. For more information on AR

Pretty sure it was on page 40 for head kit types.

Isn't that the truth. I bought one of those engine stands with the crank for rotating the engine from Summit during their Winter sale a few years ago and does that ever help. Instead of a few options on where the engine is located you can place it in any position. I now pull up a stool and re-tap all the holes crank it again tap more. Same with cleaning a block. They come in VERY HANDY if you are building several engines and really aren't that expensive.

You will have to grind on one of the nuts on the d/s head to clear the manifold. Mock it up out of the car.

Thanks yall, I appreciate it!

I'll definitely mock it up before I put it back in the car...just got to thinking about it while I was in the office yesterday. I figured someone had done it before and could give me a heads up as to what I'd be in for.

I put mine together 4 year ago and with ARP assembly lube torqued them to 85 with aluminum heads. Excuse me ARP bolts and 10.5:1. I took the studs out when I found out that I couldn't get the left head off without removng the MC on my 67 Barracuda

I cant pull the head in the Rampage either... but all
you need to do is unscrew the studs before you lift
the head.... at least thats how I have to do it...
I had to figure out ways to do certain things if I
had problems on drag week... the head gasket or lifters
is about the max I would do with the engine still
in the car(on drag week)
