I installed mine with 3M trim tape. I didn't want to drill my new tail panel. It worked very well, and it looks good.

On a 70 it is alot easier with the tail lights removed.I would think a 71 should be the same.

This might help somewhat....generally when I install 70/1 Cuda tail trim, if no holes are present, I'll tape the moulding on to the car untill it sits right, then using some 1/4" or 1/8" masking tape, tape around the outside and inside perimeter of the trim as it sits taped to the car's panel, then remove the trim, and mark out the holes in the center of the two tape lines, and space accordingly along the panel, incase you've never installed the plastic clips that come with the trim, you drill a hole just big enough for the clips barb to pass through the panel, the clip sits flush with the panel, you then tap the plastic pin located in the center of the clip flush, this spreads out the clip's barbs, just make sure the clips are nice and straight, the corners use wire style retaining clips, depending on whose trim you have, they could be push in type, threaded, or speed nut...

So the plastic pieces go into the drilled holes, sits flush, then tap the rod through so the little platic tines fan out and lock it in? It almost looks like the recesses that the trim would clip into would be upside down this way... (closer to the car body)...

Then what, slide the trim piece over each one, one at a time? It doesn't snap over top does it?

Anybody have photos of just the clips installed?

Just as you listed in your quote above, just that the pcs snap onto the clips with a slap of your palm, don't use any plastic or rubber hammers, as you'll dent the trim, only "slap" it on where a clip is present, position the piece, start at one end and work your way to the other
