Is there a way to polish a very light scratch in automotive glass? The reason why I am asking is that there is a very faint scratch that I can not even catch with my finger nail on the windshield of our 69 gtx vert. It seems like the wiper at some point had made contact with it and since it is an original correct date windshield, I would like to try and save it if at all possible. It could even very well be just the aluminum from the wiper blade that transferred over onto the glass. What would the best way to try and get this cleaned up? White polishing compound?

Eastwood offeres a glass polishing kit. I used it on all the side glass of my Super Bee with pretty good results.

I used the eastwood kit on a vehicle that had the wiper blade come off and the metal rode the glass through a storm...I figured the windshield was gone but my fingernail did'nt catch on it...It polished out perfect you'd never know there was trouble...IIRC there's two kits and I got the better of the two with all the accessories...Money well spent in my case..

I've heard that Bon Ami works well on light glass scratches. DO NOT use other brands like Comet because they have a much harsher abrasive and will damage the surface.

EASTWOOD kit X3 I bought my kit from them 20 years ago and have used it on many different vehicles.

Eastwood kit is great. Just keep surface cool with frequently sprayed water so it gets no warmer than tepid to the touch. If it gets too hot locally it will break. I recommend that you not consider it a quick job and it will go fine. Good luck.

Cerium Oxide is what is typically used for light polishing. Available at most glass places or ebag/amazon. Probably what is in the Eastwood kit, although I haven't seen their compound in person.

The Eastwood kit works great if you take your time, but be warned that continued use in the same spot will produce depressions in the glass that can be readily seen from an angle. I too wanted to save my OEM glass, but with the depth of my scratches, extensive polishing was the only way I could save them for functional use on the car. I would much rather trade a bit of "wavyness" in the glass for the highly visible scratches, but in your case (sounds like very light scoring)I would hate to see you go too far in search of a perfect finish. Remember, a polish only works by removing material, so go light on that OEM piece - just enough to clean it up without making things worse.

I had a pretty serious scratch in a side glass. I took the car to an auto glass shop and they polished it out for $25.
