Hi all

I'm posting for a friend at work, his dad bought a 66 Charger to restore and the headlight door motors seem to be locked up. First off should I be able to turn the motor over by hand with it out of the car.

If that is "yes" then it's locked up and the roll pin that holds the drive coupler on is in a position that makes it impossible to remove.

Can someone tell me if I remove the sealer between the two halves will the housing be able to be taken apart.

We work for an electric motor repair shop so brushes, comms and rewinds won't be a problem as long as I don't damage the housing or any gearing that might be in the housing.

You should be able to turn the knob on the end of the motor. If not, it's corroded up. Yes, you can disassemble them - simple worm gear setup.

Donīt know the answer to your question, but before trying to open them up,have you checked the three headlight relays on the far right side of the bulkhead in front of and slightly below the glove box?

The center one is the control relay, and on the right is the opening relay. The relay on the left is the closing relay. The opening and closing relays are interchangeable.

Topher at 66 67 charger .com rebuilds the motors. There is no knob at the end of the motor, and it is not a worm gear style motor. Its more like a mini winch motor with planetaries (kinda). There is a small bowed bracket across one end of the motor with a bolt at either end . You can loosen those and rotate the headlights by hand. If you decide to take them apart yourself be careful. The most common problem is usually the thermal limiter is stuck open. You can find lots of useful info for 1st gen chargers over at 66 67 charger.com, good luck!

Thanks for all the info I'll head over to Charger.com for more help. My biggest question now is what holds the two halves of the housing together. We have tried to power the motor on a test bench but it just spikes the amps with even trying to turn.

You've no doubt noticed the 2 screws that go all the way through. That is just half the story,if you will look where the cases seperate you will have to remove the sealer in the recessed half. After that you will find a very thin flat spiral (ends overlap )keeper. To fully dissasemble after halving the case you will have to unsolder the feed wires. You may just need a good cleaning and be sure to check the thermal limiter(looks like small set of points). Keep in mind it's been awhile since I rebuilt mine and my memorys not what it used to be.Who am I kidding it never was much good.

Here is where were at now, we disassembled one motor and cleaned all the crud out of the planetary teeth and the motor runs fine in clockwise rotation with 12V pos on one lead and 12V neg to ground, when I switch 12V pos the the other lead to reverse the motor and it won't turn. Tomorrow we will try the other motor and see if it will run after a clean up.

I assume that these work like a standard DC motor 12V+ to A1 = ccw and 12V+ to A2 = cw rotations, if this isn't correct please let me know and I'll try reversing the polarity at the pins.
