Is there a way to tell if my 904 already has the low 1st gear in it? It is already installed and I am wondering what it has, thanks.

I don't know of way without taking it apart. Once you get the pump out and the front and rear clutches you remove the snap ring on the output shaft and thrust washer, then pull the planetary set out of the shell and pull the shell. If the sun gear in the shell is larger in front than in the rear then you have the low gear set. If the sun gears are both the same size than you have the standard set. Only way I know to tell.

Get the 7 digit part number that starts with a PK on the drivers side of the case right where the base pan meets the case. There's a flat surface there with numbers stamped in it. Check with a dealer or salvage yard that uses a Hollander cross reference with the transmission identification section. If it is a 998 or 999 from a possible late 70's through the 80's model it should have the low gear set. Cars that come to mind with these trannys are the Dodge Diplomats and Chrysler 5th Avenues.

Nothing prior to '80 had the low gearset, by '82 they all had it.

Since this is in the Race forum the OP probably wants to know if the low gearset was installed at the time of build.

That's what I was thinking also, no way to know. The core case could have came from anything.

Thanks for your replies everyone and I do want to know if it was installed during the build. I guess really there is no way to know without tearing it down. No biggie I am trying to figure out some things on this new motor and that had come up in discussion.

If you take the pan off and remove the valvebody, you should be able to see the rear surface of the sun shell. The 2.45 set looks like a "salad bowl" with a smooth curve from the OD down to the sun gear. The 2.74 gear set sun shell has a little extra bend to clear the larger front half of the sun gear.

2.45 gear set sun shell. Now, a 2.74 set shell will also fit a 2.45 set with the correct sun gear, so someone may have swapped parts around.
