I probably already know the answer but I got a Dana 60 parts question.

I dropped off my Dana 60 housing to have it narrowed and after checking it out the guy building it called to let me know that one of the bearing races has spun in the housing.

Is there any way to fix it?

Does anyone make an oversized bearing and race?

Is it just junk and I need to find another housing?

I assume you're talking the carrier races? I have no answers for you other than try one of the suppliers like Randy's ring and pinion and see what the say.

Not the ends, in the center.
That's the problem.

I tried to call Randy's today, they were closed.
I'll try calling again on Monday.

Just wanted to get any ideas what people thought before then.

I guess I'm impatient.

Just call Strange and get a housing in the width you need already done. If your housing is hogged out the price to fix RIGHT would not be cheap.

It can be fixed but it'll take a horizontal but cheaper just to replace it. I had a couple that spun races, usually due to improper race crush/load so if you're building one and use any aftermarket caps, be aware of the .001-.0015" load you'll need on the races.

The Dana that I narrowed had a spun housing. The 4x4 shop that jigged it had to machine the housing to fit their jig and the shop that assembled the rear claimed they had to re-machine the same area. By that time I was so far into it, there was no turning back. Still it was less than a new Strange unit. Seems to be a common problem.

Thanks for the replies!

I've got another housing but it's one of the 2-3/4 inch axle tube ones and I was trying to use the 3 inch axle tube one I had.

I've been collecting parts for years.

It seemed silly to buy a complete new one from Strange since I already have a brand new set of Richmond 4.10 gear, a new 35 spline power lock and depending on the width a set of 35 spline axles.

I guess I'll have to decide what I'm doing now.

It's good they found it before you invested anything into it. Just start with a different housing. Around here I pick up D60's for $50 quite regularly.

The guy building it had some labor into it already (cutting the truck ends off) before he started checking out the center section.

Around here most Dana 60 asking prices are closer to the $150 mark for a cheaper one with most asking alot higher.

I paid $75 each for the ones I have over 10 years ago. (admittedly that was in trade deals so no real cash was paid out).

Any good rearend shop should have a tool to machine the carrier saddles, as this is a common problem. I bought mine over 15 years ago.

If the stock caps are too far gone, billet steel versions are available for $100 each, with bolts.

BTW, this is proof you need to pre-load the carrier bearings. A properly assembled differential with new bearings will not "turn easily".

Yep it can be fixed. as doc diff said. Any good diff shop that has the tools to do it can fix it right . I have work on diff for 18 year and have seen alot of crap. so look around first before buying a new one.
