This is a great definition I have
Here is a definition for MOPARS :
1. The first thing you want to check is the V.I.N. of the vehicle against the title or in some states the registration.
2. The second thing to check is the fender tag against the body codes. A. For 1968 and older vehicles , the S.O. number is stamped on the body. B. For 1969 and newer vehicles , the V.I.N. number is stamped on the body.
3. The next thing to check is the fender tag against the S.O. number or the V.I.N. in the "hidden numbers" locations on the body. You will find thes numbers in different loctations depending on the model year and body platform. A. 1966-68 will have the S.O. number on the upper portion drivers side radiator core support. B. 1966-67 MAY also have it on the drivers side rear body cross member that the bumper support bolts to. C. 1968 will also have it stamped on the driver's side trunk opening lip under the weather stripping. D. 1969 and newer vehicles will have the V.I.N. stamped on the driver's side upper portion of the radiator core support. E. 1969 and newer B bodies also have it stamped on the driver's side trunk opening lip under the weather stripping. F. 1970 E bodies will have it stamped on the driver's side cowl near the vent cover and will NOT have it on the driver's side trunk opening lip under the weather stripping.
What was I thinking....

the VIN if it has it will be on the bellhousing flange to the right of the oil pressure sender as viewing looking from the front of the engine , auto trans will be stamped in the same place , 4 speed is down on the pad of the pass side of the trans.

What's an S.O. number?
Shipping Order. (the sequence number is a different number) It consists of the Scheduled Production Date (SPD) and, for 1968, a six digit number. It is used to track the car early in its life from ordering the car at the dealer, through order routing at the factory and through production, invoicing and delivery of the car.
In its simplist form, the dealers and factory cared more about the SO number to designate a specific vehicle. The VIN was more related to legal requirements than the selling and building of the car.
The SO number is what should be stamped on the body for a 1968 model year car. It's the last group of numbers/letters on the bottom right hand side of the fender tag.
The SO number should be on the body, the tag, the broadcast sheet, window sticker and any other documents specific to that car.
The SO number is a good way to match a body to a VIN via the Broadcast sheet, window sticker, other documents like invoices or, if still in the car, an IBM inspection punch card.

OK, I guess I'm missing something. Where is the V.I.N. located on the '68 Road Runner?
VINs on a 68 seem to be hit and miss. Various theories exist as to why but I've never seen any credible research into them.
VINs on a 68 are:
Dash and, if they are there, on the back of the block and the front of an automatic transmission across from the block VIN. Look by the oil pressure switch.

for a four speed. Like John said, it's on a pad on the passenger's side of the transmission.
