I replaced the stock valve body in my 727 with a Turbo-Action forward pattern manual LBA unit. I don't know much about tranny's, but followed the directions that came with the valve body. It's all back together now, and its locked up when in 1st. You can feel the converter working against it, as if you have the brake on. All other gears seem to work okay.

I'll call Paul @ Turbo Action tomorrow and I'm sure he'll know whats going on, but I thought I'd post here as well. Any thoughts? tranny guys, what do I have going on, here?

Sounds like a band overlap problem to me. It's not releasing properly.

Are you saying it won't move in 1st at all but will shift to 2nd and 3rd OK?

The reason I ask is a LONG story but my next question might give you a clue.

They didn't send you a reverse pattern by mistake did they?

Kevin

Thats why I asked if it would move in 1st with the engine
off(that eliminates any hyd issues)

It is a Turbo Action #17675 valve body (Non-brake, forward pattern, LBA). The car is still in the air on jackstands. What I'm describing is from watching the rear wheels in the air. With engine running; 1st: no go / locked up against the converter. Everything else seems correct. With engine OFF, wheels WILL move in 1st (as well as 2nd and D). So in my mind, that eliminates the Park rod issue, correct? And means that it IS something hydraulic, correct?

Also, just to confirm: I did check the shift lever in each gear against the shifter. It IS properly getting into each gear position.

My luck..... Paul is out of the office all day today. Won't be able to get ahold of him until tomorrow.

You are correct... the wheels turn with the engine
off then its a hyd issue... basically 2 items on at
the same time.... yep... call Paul

Had that same problem with two TA 17675 valve bodies several years back in w5dart66's car but with a 904. sent both valve bodies back to turbo action. Paul said there was nothing wrong with them. When i got them back they did have new separator plates in them so not sure what all was wrong but they both worked fine after that. I called Paul again but he never would say what was wrong with them.

I have a valve body you can borrow to get the car moving, its reverse pattern but, the price is right.

Thanks for the offer, Dustin. I have my TransGo / stock one as well If I wanted to do that, but I only want to remove the pan on this thing once to fix this, and I do want this particular VB (forward & LBA).

Well, I talked with Paul Forte at T-A this morning. He concedes that it sounds like a valve body issue. Out it comes.

This is all a part of paying your dues. Keep smiling! I have broken more parts than I can count and I am sure that I will break more in the future.

Uggghhh...... Its nearly June!

Just got off the phone with Turbo Action. Paul says he didn't find anything wrong with the valve body, but hasn't tested it in a transmission yet. He DID offer to just send out a new one, which I jumped on immediately. but then he quickly noted that they didn't have any 17675's in stock, and he would have to build one. Said he could get it out next week.

Thank god my daughter has kept me busy with her Fastpitch Softball schedule, otherwise this would REALLY be pissing me off.

*********UPDATE: June 13th********

After a few phone conversations with Paul Forte @ TurboAction over the past few weeks, he is finally sending out a new valve-body today.

He decided a few weeks ago, before sending a new one out that he needed to completely verify mine was defective, so after not finding an issue with it on the bench, he installed it into their mule car and.... bingo. it did the same thing it did in my car (1st gear locked).

Since he couldn't find anything wrong with it on the bench, we decided that it would be best to check the new one he was going to send out in the same car, which he did and found no issue. bottom line, the valve body I had somehow has a "ghost problem" that Paul cant figure out. He verified that a new one worked fine and it's in the mail.

Why am I bothering to post this non-sense??? I don't know. maybe because its the closest thing I've had to actually driving my car in a number of months now. Jeez this is frustrating.

I totally agree! Please don't take my comments as a slight on Paul Forte. I'm frustrated with the situation, but Paul has been great to work with, and I'd buy again from him in a heartbeat!

I realize that this is what you get in HotRodding, but that doesn't make it any easier.
