At what point is an auxiliary trans cooler and deep pan necessary? I'm getting ready to install a TF-2 kit in my 340 Dart and am wonder if that will necessitate a cooler.

This winter I plan to upgrade the heads, cam, intake, custom convertor, etc.. Will it be okay to wait until then to install a trans cooler, besides the stock one in the radiator?

Right now, the motor, trans, and convertor are pretty much stock.

Most stock transmissions don't get hot enough for the additives in ATF to work properly so the factory runs the trans fluid through the tranny HEATER in the bottom of the radiator to help warm the fluids up and keep them warm Thumperdart put a mechanical tranny temp gauge in his dart years ago, he had a three row aluminum tranny cooler only(no fluids going into in the tranny) mounted crossways in front of his radiator, the tranny temps ran less than 120F even beating on it in the summer(100+ F) on the street in the Mojave desert My suggestion is to buy a tranny temperature gauge first and find out now what yours runs, fix it when it needs fixing I had a 1998 1/2 24 valve CTD 2500 Ram, that tranny never got above 130 F empty in the summer with the air condition on in the same place as Thumper It would get up to around 160 in the winter towing my 24 Ft enclosed car trailer with a car in it at or above 65 MPH, 220F going up a 17 mile 7% grade at 70 MPH in the summer(110 F + outside air temps) with the air conditioning on and locked out of O.D. on cruise control ) It would cool down to 180 F as soon I went over the top of the grade and started flat towing again, it would cool down to 120 F going down the same hill the other way towing

Wait till you get the high stall converter.
Aftermarket trans fluid pans are nice because they have the drain plug

""Wait till you get the high stall converter.""

My 10" converter cruised at temps around 160-180 and it would spike at 195 after aggressive driving (WOT runs). Now my 9.5" cruises around 170-185 and spikes to 205 after aggressive driving.
I only run an external tranny cooler (apx 10"x14") currently and it is plumbed thru the bottom of the radiator. This Summer, I will go up a couple sizes on the cooler and run a deeper tranny pan.
