Has anyone built a motor with these yet, and if so, how are they? They looks really nice from the photos I have seen. I'm going to be pulling my bigblock out in favor of a SB soon, and I'm looking for feedback on these heads. They seem to be a nice head at a really good price unless I'm missing something. They are basically a Magnum head adapted to work with older 340/360 blocks and rockers correct?

I take it that no one is really using them?

I got a set, prepped by Brian @ IMM engines. They are on my 318, I used Hughes 1.5 shaft mount roller rockers. IMO, they are a VERY good head, and absolutely woke up my 318. I'm very happy with them.

My gut feeling is that they are a nice head for mild performance builds.
For not a lot of dollars more , you are into Eddy territory , then Airwolf , then on to the bring your wallet type stuff.
But if you don't mind an iron head and don't need to go much over 480ish h.p. , they are a nice choice.
I seem to recall someone getting 500 from them , but I think reliability would suffer when you push this particular envelope that far.
Good info here http://www.immengines.com/rhsheads.html

Yeah, I'm torn Between the Edelbrocks and the 360X's. I may end up just going the Edelbrock Route since by the time you assemble the 360X's you really haven't saved anything and you still have steel heads rather than aluminum.

I have em and i think they re good but if i would do it all over i would get bare ebrocks cause of the weight and the ability to repair.
The rhs imo should be run ootb on a street daily driver as an option against having stock heads rebuilt.

RHS X's will make 525-535 easily on a well set up 400" engine without much issue. Brian at IMM has built quite a few. 480hp is a piece of cake and really a mild streeter.

Pay attention to what you are buying. There are a lot of vendors for these heads and they are not outfitted the same. Some limited to .525ish lift, others to .600+.

The one Brian built for Car Craft made ~485hp and about ~475 in the car was our guess with mufflers, etc. Car ran 6.93 at 96-97 weighing in at 3350.

DusterDoug has a 400+ with RHS in a a duster that goes low 10 at 130+ at 3000# or so.

Why do you want to give up on the 499 ? With the right cam and heads you're looking at a 9.90 car.

I figured a few guys would wonder. I like the more economical approach of a pumpgas small block, plus it's so much lighter, and I feel like for what I could sell the 499 for I could build the SB I want and have $ left over to set my car up for electronics bracket racing. Another reason: I didn't put the BB in, it was in the car when I bought it, and My car is a original 340 swinger, and I think putting a SB in would be really cool, kinda put the car back the way it came.

Yes, Dusterdoug does...although I'm cudadoug over here...LOL!

Our goal was to go mid 10's and I took one look at those heads and thought "no way" with those tiny ports. NICE quality castings, though. Surprise! They flowed pretty good as supplied and we gained about 10 cfm with careful but minor rubbing. Best of 10.14 @ 128 with a solid flat tappet cam, through the muffs...with only 30* of timing at 3100# race weight.

Motor has slowed down a couple of tenths and about 3 mph this year (after 150+ runs), but a leakdown showed all was well. However, we lost about 40# of valve spring pressure (beehives) so the heads are off getting new springs and a VJ touch up.

L O V E the RHS heads!

*Interesting to note: My EQ magnums actually outflow the RHS heads below .450 and stay right with them through .550. At .600, they are only about 5 cfm behind the RHS's...

If I could put a BB in the car below, I'd do it in a heartbeat, instead I'm gonna spend 12K on a SB that will be 3 tenths slower than a 9K BB, and then I'll be crossing my fingers, hoping it's 3/4ths as reliable as I know the BB would be.

Edelbrock heads with upgraded spring set, and enough porting to equal the RHS heads we sell will run you about 2250.00.
Our heads are 1445.00.

I've made 520HP with a solid FT cam, 10.2:1, Scat 4" kit, our heads with pinch porting only, and typical RPM intake/950Hp carb.

Our hyd. roller versions make 525HP and a bit earlier than the solid FT cam deal.
This is with pinch porting ONLY!

I'm working on a solid roller/high compression version soon so we'll know just how much HP the RHS can support but I'm guessing around 600 or so. It won't be on kill, just a good bracket type build.
Might find it's way in my car too...maybe.

Honestly, why do you care? I asked for opinions on a set of heads, you offered no help for what I asked for. And just so you know, I'm not building a 12K small block, although I could if I wanted to. As for reliability, I know plenty of guys who run small blocks with many 100's of passes on them, some of them running 5.90's in the 1/8. How about if you can't answer the question I asked just keep your opinions to yourself.

Still.........mega props for a perfect use of a Cool Hand Luke quote.
I am a bit surprised by the projected power these heads are capable of.
All things considered , you are going to be spending a good chunk on the bottom end too if you want reliable 600 h.p. , and maybe that statement is optimistic.
I think you will be finding the " fuse " at that power level. The part that says enough is enough.
I am working on a small block myself , so I encourage that kind of behavior.

70Dart499,
It's your car, your money.
I was giving you a bump, and getting the SB guys all riled up at the same time....

Brian,
The youngest brother owes me money, putting him on this project is the only way I'll get even! We will see, I may end up on your doorstep...

TBH, my car is an original 4 spd 340 GTS, i fitted the 440 about 15 yrs ago, previous to that, the 340 ran about high 12's and the way to go at that time was BB for more power. If I was in that position now, with what's available. I would stroke the 340 block out and fit a good set of alloy race heads and work on the 4 spd a bit more and try and keep the body and chassis as original as possible.
Or maybe get another car altogether.
What rotating assembly is in your 499 ?

I have a set of the X heads on my street driven 78 SWB. I got them from Brian at IMM and since this was my first experience with a small block build I have nothing to compare them to...however...what I can say is that my truck is a .030 over 360, runs a small hyd cam, these heads, headers, air gap intake, 750 carb, bone stock mechanical fuel system and a 3.55 gear. Don't know what my truck weighs but it is a solid 12 second runner on pump gas. I have been eyeballing the Airwolf's, a fuel system upgrade, a hyd roller, and single plane intake, just for grins...

It's an Eagle Assembly, supposed to have the good H-Beam Rods and forged crank. But honestly I don't know since I bought the car complete. I do know the motor has ported 452 heads, and a Hyd Purple Shaft but I don't know the specs on it, since the guy I bought it from had lost almost all the paperwork. Its a well built motor, make no mistake about it, but I'm wanting something different. Since I mostly bracket race, I'm wanting something more economical, something I can run a pumpgas/race gas blend in.

If someone mentioned a SB head that flowed a true 260+ range at .500-550, with a decent chamber and exhaust port, what would the power potential be, regardless of material?

There are more than a few running good numbers with these doorstop heads.

Cost less than Ede's, as Brian puts them together, and perform better.
