Ok folks, I know it's a brand X...but I have to change the plugs and wires on my wife's '98 Olds Achieva 3.1 V6. The rear plugs seem real difficult to get to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some of those cars, luminas and such, the dog bones can be loosened and engine tipped forward. Don't know about the achieva.

I'll tell you how I did my wife's Gran Am GT..Spark plug socket and two long extensions...You're not going to see what you're doing so don't even try...It's all feel...but I did use a small mirror on the telescopic handle just to look in there between the plugs going in and out...Another piece of advice is to spin the plug almost out then back in until finally spining it free...Those aluminum threads are unforgiving with even a small amout of dirt/carbon...I started to take the original set straight out and one of the holes in the back would'nt take the new plug... ...I had to buy a thread chaser... Then finished the rest making sure to clean the threads on the way out...

Probably have to remove the upper dog bone mount and tilted the motor forward and that should give you room to get to the back side plugs.

I just did them on a '99 Grand Am with the 3.4. You have my sympathy.

Isn't the 3.4 a dohc? That's the one the upper intake needs to come off and just get one for a alt. On the 3.1 as stated remove the ft dog bone mount(just remoce the bolt on one side) and get someone in the car to jam the parking brake as you rock the car back while still in park. The motor will roll foward and the plugs are much easier to get.

I found that on my brothers car I could get to the right rear ones through the holes in the inner fender behind the passenger tire.

I took the tire off and was able to get to it easier.

The other two were either from the bottom or after I took the coil pack off. It's been awhile but at least you don't have to change them often.

I can do either of them in an hour. Of course thats what I do all day every day. Get the coil packs out of the way and its easy.

Mission accomplished.
Geeze, what a PITA. The dogbone was on the right side (pass. side) which is the front of the motor. I removed the three bolts and using a floor jack and a piece of wood, I jacked the rear of the motor (actually side of motor) and it tilted enough forward. It gave me eoungh room - barely. 2 1/2 hours for me, start to finish. My wife was wondering why I kept putting it off. Now she knows. Thanks everyone for the information!
My Real car is a '68 Road Runner. My daily driver is a '98 neon - which is very easy to work on!

Any 90's transverse V6 Chrysler, 92 Diamante where the intake goes back over the rear bank, or a 93 LS400 where the plugs are under a cover that are clipped under 3 other layers of covers. Its like a puzzle. Of course B/RB's with logs in a narrow A engine bay is no fun either.
