hey folks! so, i am wondering, has anyone dropped the oil pan off a hemi engine while in the car, in a E body with factory k-member? i am still chasing a rear main leak, and before puling it all apart for the THIRD time, i was contemplating trying to get a peek at things without tearing everything down again, engine still in car. i have a 4 post lift, jacking stands, etc, so it could be done up in the air as well for ease of working on things. i would love to hear your input, this is my first mopar, and i have never tried it before, so i thought i would ask here first. (tried the search feature, but i always have a hard time getting results, no matter how few or specific of words i use)

thank you all in advance!

I've dropped pans on 440's many times on ebodys, can't see why a hemi would be different, other that a little tighter access due to the pan???

Drop the centerlink by disconnecting the pitman and idler connections--you do NOT have to bust the tie rod connections.

Only thing I can think of, isn't the pick-up tube diameter larger on a Hemi than on a RB?

Drop the centerlink and one side or the other, pitman arm or idler arm so you can slide the center link out of the way and take the pan off, I did it many times that way back in the 1970 running my 1970 hemi Cuda 4 speed car You can to

It will come out.

Just seperate the pitman and idler arms from the center link and pull the steering linkage down.

Getting it apart is not too hard, the hints above will help. But getting the pan, windage tray and two gaskets up and around the pick-up and K is a bit of a challenge.

A little trick that helps is to strip the individual wires out of an 1 1/2 or so of some 10 or 12 guage wire and use them to hold the sandwich of the pan, gaskets and tray together as you thread them up into place.

Twist a strand of wire through a bolt hole to hold it all together. Do that on 5 or 6 holes and it will go up as an assembly and let you get the bolts started. You can leave the wires in place, they won't hurt a thing.

Hi, Maybe you have already checked the rear seal holder but here is one that caused a leak for me. Someone used to long of bolts in the pan and broke out the bottom of the holes in the holder and then the oil in the pan leaks around the bolts just below the seal. You should not be able to look thru the pan bolt holes. I always seal the outside of the holder where the side card board seals go also. Just trying to help, Bob Good luck!
