On my small block, I am using the Carter Strip Super Mechanical fuel pump:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crt-m6270/overview/make/dodge

Currently the fuel pressure is too high at around 11-12 PSI, pushing fuel past the needle and seat on the carb, sometimes flooding it out.

I'm thinking I should use a dead head style regulator to cure this problem..what are your thoughts, and what do you recommend for a regulator? I don't wanna have to plumb a return line system.

This is for a street car.

Thank you.

It's been done for 50+ years. Few know how the mechanical fuel pump works. There is a lever, a diaphragm and a spring behind the diaphragm, and two one-way valves. The SPRING pushes the fuel into the engine. When some of the fuel has been pushed into the carb by the spring, the lever gets close enough to the cam that it activates, it pulls back on the diaphragm, drawing fuel into the pump. So it won't hurt to have a pressure regulator between the stock mechamical pump and the carb.

Well you pretty much answered your own question...
you dont want a return line so that leaves 2 things..
get a different pump OR use a dead head regulator
