ok, I picked up a 78 318 last summer for my 81 d150 short box, motor has maybe 10k on it, the guy said it had a rv cam in it well before I swap the motor in I would really like to throw a new cam in, I want something with a lopey idle yet still have power an not have to change my valve springs if I can get away with it.. I have been checking out the summit brand cam's an they seem pretty affordable are they any good?? the truck will have a 4bbl intake 500-600cfm carb, header's, hei ignition, all the cheap upgrade's for now.

Me too, I want to build a mileage 318. I have some viper rods 6.221" in length which will give me too high of a SCR as is (maybe an atkins build) with my 318 pistons/302 heads for 87 octane. But here's a BTT for ya

i had a summit cam in a 70 318 long ago. it was the .441 lift cam they sell. i had a nice lopey idle and woke up the motor. the valves floated at higher rpm's with the stock springs, a scarey sound. comp cams 901 springs only cost $60 all you need is a valve spring compressor, they are easy to change.

I had a 340 purpleshaft cam sitting around so that's what I put in my 318. It sounds good and pulls up a very steep hill by my house with ease. That's all I really need it to do.(sound good and be able to get out of it's own way) I didn't drive it enough last fall to get any mileage info on it.

We ran all the Summit cams. The small one is basicaly stock. The larger is a decent cam for the price.Has an agressive sounding idle but has great street manners.Had one in my kids truck. He drove it daily forn 3 years with no problems. It does pull good also and pretty much a drop in.Rocky

That 78 318 has low comp keep the cam below or at 440 lift a older 360 cam would perk it up and a Comp 252 or 260 single pattern would work very well.

Well, stockish for many v8's, but it's a good bit bigger than the stock 318's! iirc, stock 318's ~ 180ish @.050 vs 204 @ .050 for the summit. It is small enough to reuse stock valve springs, no doubt.

Had the small summit cam in a 68 coronet I had...even with the 2.76 gears, the small cam worked great. Pushed that thing, tall gears and all to very low 15's with the tiny 'teen!

And that it's so cheap is a plus!

How would a Hughes Whiplash work in a '84 318 with stock lockup converter and 2.94 gears? I'm about ready to do a cam (was thinking the Summit K6900 cam) change when I replace the timing chain. Has stock exhaust manifolds with 2.5" single exhaust and a Performer intake/1406 Eddy.
