I’m installing the exhaust manifolds on my 1970 340 engine. The FSM is not clear on how to install these manifolds. I have five questions –
1. Which way do the conical washers go? (See attachment) - A or B?
2. Are the washers used at each fastener or just the ends as the FSM says?
3. Did these manifolds use a gasket other then the right side heat shield?
4. What are the torque specs?
5. Were these manifolds painted orange on the engine from the factory?
Obviously washers cannot be used with the two shoulder bolts; the mounting kit does provide enough washers to be used at all other locations.
Thanks Bryan

Pic A for the washers, I've only seen washers on the 2 most outer ends, 1 gasket/plug shield on drivers side

Manifolds were painted on the engine. Some say they were just oversprayed but I doudt the line workers cared enough to try to go around them. Im sure they were pretty much covered with paint.

Pic A for the washers. Washers are for studs only. Gasket on passenger side, shield on driver's side. Manifolds installed before paint.

Your pass side pic shows washers under the bolts in the center of manifold
Also where did you get those pass side gaskets?
Nice looking engine by the way!

You're correct washers everywhere except for sleeves (sorry)

The gasket is a regular fel-pro that's had the connecting section removed.

I can't take credit for the restoration. It was done by another Moparts member-Thanks Troy

FWIW, I just pulled the manifolds of my original 318. It had no gaskets on the passenger side.

If you look at this picture(318) you can see that there aren't any washers on the center bolts. http://www.moparaction.com/Article/GROCERY_GOLD/IMG_0674_1200x900.jpg

From the comments on this thread plus some more research it appears that the washers are for each end of the manifold but not the center like the FSM says. Why or their purpose I don't know.
No gaskets from the factory on right side. However Fel Pro makes a gasket # MS 90460 to be used on hard to seal manifolds - old, uneven surfaces or warped.
Manifolds were painted by factory on the engine, which likely quickly burned off with use.

My 1969 one-owner 340 never had the exhaust manifolds off until recently. My disassembly photos show washers at each end of the manifold but not the center, as mentioned above. I believe the bolt kits for this application have 4 thick conical washers each side, bare steel. All the bolts and washers for the exhaust manifolds are bare steel, not plated.
