Built this little 440-6 for a resto job. 440 + .030" Heads(pretty much stock 906 with light bowl work) and cam by Dwayne Porter. I built this one with the KB quench domes. Comes in at 10.70:1. Stock prepped LY rods and stock reground crank. Crane 1.5 Ductile iron rockers. Ran on the dyno with the stock manifolds and dynomax super turbos so the numbers are more realistic.. Made best 435 HP/ 490 TQ. No issues except for the customer supplied rebuilt original carbs. No secondary operation. With the limited tineframe, I didnt have the time to screw around with figuring out the problem. . Was getting a signal from the center carb, but wouldnt open the outboards. My guess is that the kill bleeds were monkeyed with. I threw on a set of new out of the box holleys I had on the shelf. The fuel curve wasnt ideal(too fat), and I didnt want to start to modify these so maybe there was a bit more on the table. I didnt have the luxury of the air cleaner as well and they usually make a bit more power with the cleaner on. Overall a good experience. Thanks to Alan (ARC) for the use of the new Superflow. Nice setup and everything went smooth(except for the carbs ). Oh, and the rear main seal was BONE DRY!(whew).. MB

Just wondering how much quench you ended up with? What gas is the owner going to use?
72 RR, Pump gas 440, 452s, 3800 lbs, Corked, ET Radials,. 11.33@117.72.
Same car, bone stock 346s, 9.5 comp, baby solid. 12.24@110.

Nice but PLEASE paint it ORANGE. And FWIW I think it'd make the best power w/ just the base plate. The air filter and lid are very restrictive.
Dont worry. it will look "OE" correct before it goes in the car. Ill usually refrain from final paint until I know everything is kosher. I will spend a lot of effort final painting one of these and inevitibaly you get it nicked up moving it and getting it on and off the dyno. Oh, and it will have the factory valve covers, and all the doo dads that the were put on these originally too.
As for the air cleaner. In dyno tests we found that it will make most power with just the base, a bit less with the lid and a K and N. and the least with nothing. Nothing earth shattering, usually less than 5 HP.
It should run on pump premium witout issues. It has an automatic so that should help some. Some people that use these cars with sticks for some reason complain of pingiing during hot weather. You take a ride with them and they are trying to lug it up a hill in 4th gear at 20 mph iin the heat. I told him maybe splash a bit of race gas in it during the hot weather, if any noticeable detonation occurs.
Idled nice with 16.5" vacuum.
Thanks all.

Nice build Mike!
What RPM was peak HP and TQ at ???
Do anything different in the build to work better with the stock Ex manifolds?
Cheers,
Arnie

Looks good.
I'm curious if my air cleaner setup would help or hurt on the dyno. I was told it has more square inches of filter material that a stock air cleaner setup.
Also curious about the specs on the cam yout using as I'm running a stock bore 1966 440 with slightly modded 516 heads and a .528 MP solid cam.
My car idles nice, but only at about 8"-9" vacuum

How much timing at idle?

I have the timing locked out so it's at full advance 37"

I had a set of originals that were drilled oversize. There are a few easy ways to fix them.

sounds like my old set-up. I had like 14" of vac at idle. You got something going on... You have 37* total what's the initial? Did you back the screws in the out 1/2 turn and adjust?

cool, nice build and thanks for sharing this info.
just curious....the driver's side exhaust manifold looks more like the 73-74 type casting, I thought all the 69-71 sixpacks had the 'smoother' (non ribbed) castings like the magnums.
the manifolds look the same as was on the 74 police interceptor motor I used to build my 508.

Yes...
These manifolds are extras that I use for dyno tests and such. The right side is identical, but the left side is externally different. They are dimensionally the same as the 70 HP ones I am going to use on the actual car in question so the results would be the same. The ones I am going to use on the car are already blasted and prepped, so I didnt want to mess them up while running on the dyno.
Kinda aggravated to not be able to really sharpen the tune(due to the carb issues). Wouldnt be earth shattering gains, but might have been able to get it into the mid/high 440's for HP. It was pretty fat when it made that number..
One other thing to mention. I usually set the lifter preload on the low side, but went to the high side on this one to keep things quiet. That might have been worth a bit there, but again, were not talking anything eye opening...
