At the last race of the season the rear end gears broke in my Dart. I put another ring and pinion into the car a few weeks ago when we had a warm (50F) day. It has been cold since then, but today it was 47F at 9:30am, so I pulled the transmission to inspect the sprag for damage.

Well, the sprage was OK. I did straighten two of the tabs that the springs push against since they were not exactly straight. But the surprise was the output shaft was broke in two pieces! See attached. Good thing I have a spare trans to build up.

What caused that? We broke the spline section where it slides into the transfer case last year, Also what would cause the sprag to fail when using 1st gear to do burn outs? You got me thinking about it from my last post.

While it was apart, I decided to change the replaceable bronze bushing in the TCS aluminum front drum. I have a lot of passes on this using a Griner high pressure valve body and the teflon rings they recommend. These rings wear the drum instead of the stator support ring grooves.

The bushing was a light press fit in the drum.
I used a 2-ton manual arbor press, and it came out and went back in without excessive force. The trick is to have a well fitting bushing driver. Which I made on my lathe. One end is for pressing it out, the other for pressing it back in.

I have one that was for my spare trans if you need it. It looks like it might have a bit of runout but I haven't checked real close. It was in the car for the 9.86 pass last fall. This is a reminder of why I shouldn't wait until march to work on the car, lol.

The repaired transmission is back in the car now.
Good thing I had spare parts and gaskets, rings, etc.

It sucks to find it, but I am happy that I was able to work a couple days and get it fixed and back in the car so quickly. It does give me a feeling of accomplishment to get it done. All those years accumulating spare transmissions from junkyards, learning to do repairs myself, and buying the tools and gaskets, etc. to have on-hand has paid off this weekend.

Way to go Jim! You always tell people to check the sprag after a driveline break, this a good example why that must be done.
Good luck this year Don

Are 727 output shafts more prone to breakage than inputs ?

Rule is never do burnouts in 1st gear ,2nd to high normal procedure.

I have an output shaft just like this one that came out of a 69 Belvedere wagon, with an open rear, that the owner thought it would be a good idea to remove the brake line from one rear wheel and cap it so he would have control over the brakes during the burnout contest at Carlisle one year. when the rear sprag started to roll over the shock snapped the shaft off , he was LUCKY it did that ...

If you have a full auto shift trans you have no choice but to start the burnout in first gear, shifting the trans into low which applys the rear band then upshifting would be the way to go.

I broke the output shaft off in the transfer case of my 2000 Ram building boost against the convertor while foot braking it , the boost went over 20psi before my brain registered to take my foot off the brake pedal. 1000 ft/lbs at 1300 rpm will do that ...

Can someone explain the series of events that causes a sprag failure.

Thats what happens with all the hp Jim. Not only do you hurt the sprag you break the output shaft. Glad you got it fixed so fast. Thats one reason I want to go to a Dana because if I break this 8-3/4 the trans will come out. I have a few output shafts in my garage from all my years at the Dodge dealer but I dont remember what some fit. Many times we ordered output shafts if it needed it or not under warranty. Ron
