With value in mind... What battery charger will I need to keep my battery topped off between rounds? What are you all using? I was thinking of maintainig 2 batteries while racing (one in trunk, and a reserve), what do you all think?

I am trying to keep the cost down on a generator purchase. My request is based on minimum requirements

I use a Black and Decker smart charger (AGM compabile) to charge one yellow top Optima, between rounds. I run two classes, 1/4 mile sportsman and 1/8 mile pro with a 12.5:1, .590 MP camed 440, without a alternator. I have run this charger with a 500 watt (quite small!) Honda generator with no problem. I start the day with the battery fully charged, and put the charger on full tilt as soon as I get back to the pits. In the earlier rounds the battery is back to full charge before I run again, but in the later rounds, I have litterly put the charger on, removed my jacket, fueled the car, changed my dial in (for the other class), took the charger off and went back to the staging lanes. No kidding. And all the while running the CSI water pump and 16" Deraille fan.
This charger is about $150 if I remember correctly.
One other thing I really like about this charger is its size. I can put the charger in the trunk with the cord plugged up and NEVER worry about road testing the battery charger. I back my car into my pit, so when I leave for the lanes, I pull straight out. If I do forget to unplug the charger, the only thing I have dragging behind me is the 4' cord.

I will probably end up that way, but I wanted to give this bare bones racing method a try before I go trouble free. THANKS

Black and decker smart charger here as well. I run an alternator but run the water pump and fan to get it cooled off. The charger works good to keep it topped off.

I'll save you from wasting your time... I tried the
no alt... I tried the alt with a switch to turn off
the alt... the car runs quicker with FULL electrical ....
do what you want... and its very easy to wire up

what alt. set up do I go with? I have a motor plate with the oil filter where the alt. usually goes.... I have the vacuum pump set up on the drivers side. I did not see anything Mopar specific on Summits site for small blocks. The ones I did see were pricey.

Are you using the DMI lowmount bracket? What pulley is available for the vacuum pump and the alt?

I run 2 optima red tops in my car and just use a sears craftsman battery charger. I also run an alternator, but have it off right now, due to not having the correct pulley set up after I installed my vacuum pump. But I will re install my alternator again as soon as I get it sorted back out. The alt system is a no brainer for keeping up in the quick rounds.

If you have a motor plate or solid mounts why not make a bracket and mount it on the frame. Thats what I did works good and is out of the way.

WOW! looks good.... can you send a photo of the pulley set-up. I have a small single pulley there for the vacuum pump. This is the reason why I was going with the battery only... The obstacle of how to incorporate the alt. in the set-up. Thats pretty smart.

The bottom pulley is a moroso single groove and the adjuster on top is from March. I welded a 1.1/4" angle (IIRC) for the mount on the bottom. Been that way for 3 years now with zero problems.

After racing using battery charger... very problematic, you guys were right .

I am one man racing team, so I finally installed a alternator.

I need some feed back on how I installed the alternator. I doubled up on the pulley on the Moroso vacuum pump, then high mounted the alternator with a additional belt from the vacuum pump. Does anybody see a problem with this? I have not tried it out yet.....The alternator is a 65 amp race.
