So i recently purchased a 5.9 magnum from an 01 ram with 102k on it for my v8 conquest project. Once i got it home i naturally tore it all apart like any normal car guy does. I have looked all over researching stock cam specs for the 5.2 and the 5.9 and most of what i have found is that the 5.9 has slightly more duration and less lift than the 5.2. Then i stumbled upon a post from another forum where a guy put a 5.2 into an intrepid and made mention of the 01 5.9 cam being slightly better than the earlier ones. His measurements were .432/.432 for the lift and assumed 249/269 duration like the rest. This is part of what decided my purchase of the particular motor i got, and i only payed 250 for it after hearing it run. So i began taking measurement off of the cam that came out of my motor and from what i gather the 01 cam my be the best stock cam out of them all. Numbers i got: lobe lift - .275/.279 valve lift with 1.6rr - .440/.446 approximate lsa - 112 duration - still only have the 249/269(no way to check) Has anybody else had findings similar to this? Can anybody else confirm my numbers either phtsically or from fsm's? Id like to know to make sure im measuring everything properly and if i am right id like to see if they changed the duration at all. If all pans out im going to see what i can do with a mild 5.9, this cam, and some interesting rocker hardware

bullet cams can regrind it for ya.... I ran the HR259/316 lobe on both the intake and exhaust on my 318 magnum and it worked great, made great power http://bulletcams.com/Masters/HRlobes.htmthis lobe worked great with the hughes 1110 spring, and used 2.2L retainers

You might want to purchase a "degree wheel" and dial indicator w/magnetic stand. Checking the duration at .050 would be very easy then. Have done it with a few cams and it only takes a few minutes!
I have one but the motor is apart for cleaning right now so i cant check it myself, just wanted to see if anyone else had the same cam.

But please post up pictures of your Conquest build! I was thinking about building one of those years ago - and never got around to finding one.
Ill be sure to post up pictures of the car, should be a fun project.

I have measured a bunch of cams from the magnum motors and this is the trend I seen. I aparently did not save all the spces but...
92-99 318 is the same and has a little more lift and less duration than the 360 cam from 93-99 360
Seems like there was a little LSA change around the time the EGR valve went away in 95 ish.
When the R/T came out it got a bigger lift than either 318 or 360 till 2000 at witch point ALL 360s got the big R/T cam.
I do not remember measureing a 2000+ 318 cam.
I talked to an engineer at the mopar nationals back in the mid 2000s who was a friend of my friends (who used to own a Dodge dealer in Tn), we discussed some of this and he said he helped with the dyno testing and development of the cams for the production engines and the R/T cam or 2000+ 5.9 cam was by far a better performer than the other 360 cams and the 318 cam was close, the R/T and later 360 cam worked incredible with the beer barrel intake, something about a better cat allowed them to run a better cam. All my measureing seems to back up what he said.
Almost all the specs I found in the service manuals were total bogus for most of the magnums production.

So the r/t and the '01 up cam would be the best of all the stock cams? Do you have any idea as to the true duration and lsa of these cams? Thanks for the info

I had it all but can not find it now, I think I stored it all on my last computer right before it took a dump.
I remember 2000 and up all 360s got the good one so that is the cores I pick when I get a choice.

Put the cam back in the block with the crank and timing chain (don't even need a piston for duration.) zero out dial indicator on base of cam, with a degree wheel on the crank rotate till you get 0.006" lobe lift, record degree wheel #, rotate past max lift to 0.006" and record degree #, find the degrees between the first and second recorded numbers and you have advertised duration. Repeat using 0.050" lobe lift if you want the 0.050" duration numbers. If yo have a way to attach the degree wheel to the cam, you could do this without a crank/timing set, but the duration would be in can degrees, so you would need to double it to get crank degrees.

You are in Columbus, look up Kammer & Kammer Racing Engines. They have a machine there made just for measuring cam specs. They also do a ton of Magnum stock class engine builds. Can't go wrong getting to know them.
